Bazzite is like a easy newbie introduction to Linux. It’s really hard to mess up Bazzite, like really hard. In the same regard it can also be a pain to install anything outside of their ecosystem. If you run it with Distrobox it’s not a big deal but I don’t see a lot of new users going that route. If you’re just looking to browse, stream, and game than Bazzite is perfect and you don’t need anything else. Beyond that? Distrobox or use a different distro.
I tried Bazzite, I didn’t like it, I found it too limiting but I do see the appeal of it.

if I’m on KDE I just don’t bother using it. I just remove it from my panel. krunner is all I need as it can also run commands.

it’s fine for average users but if you really want to use it for something other than browsing or gaming you really have to use it with Distrobox. And that’s fine, bit of extra work to set up but honestly if you’re going to use something that is beyond web browsing, streaming, and gaming you’re probably going to go with a different distro anyways.

yes I should have clarified I completely own the domain. the deal I got was essentially a “coupon” thus free for registering the domain that the web hosting service was partnered with. naturally once my first year is up I have to pay for the domain on a regular basis.

This is what I did but I would suggest you shop around. in many cases for first time sign ups you can get the domain for free and you pay a discounted price for the first year. For example I went with a local webhosting service where I got the domain for free, unlimited email account creations, and a decent shared web hosting server for $50 a year. I use the web hosting to host my personal site regardless of the fact I have a dedicated server with OVH. But I mean the free domain and emails + web hosting for $50 a year was a deal I couldn’t turn down.
just upgraded my instance. pretty good, very smooth and yay animated profile avatars!

there’s many forks that have the stuff turned off by default like Librewolf and Floorp
I personally use Qutebrowser. there’s many better options than straight up Firefox.

I…I don’t understand. Why would you use Bazzite for software development and not gaming when user is not a gamer but just likes KDE?
you can literally put KDE on anything. Bazzite isn’t friendly to installing anything that isn’t a flatpak or whatever.
Just use a different distro. you don’t need Bazzite. Switch them to like Fedora KDE or something.
And to people in this thread trying to push a camel through a pin hole…why? you’re talking about setting up VMs and Distroboxs or just using flatpaks on Bazzite when the most painless solution is to just switch distros.
You picked the wrong distro, just switch them to something more appropriate for what they want to do.

it’s my default browser. It’s good and very impressive considering it’s essentially one dude working on it.

If i’m using firefox I prefer trydactil over vimium.
Trydactil is more inline with Qutebrowser. and honestly it actually does quickmarks better than qutebrowser. what I like about Trydactil is you can have quickmark binds set up to access sites. Works awesome if you also install the i3 firefox theme.
Only issue is Mozilla is an absolute paranoid android about certain things like using these extensions when opening new tabs or using them to navigate ANYTHING that Mozilla directly controls. then you have to get ANOTHER extension just to make tabs work the way you want. it’s annoying. So I just use Qutebrowser instead.

I use AERC. TUI that is just so painfully easy to use. integrates with whatever editor you use like vim or emacs or whatever. Account setup is a breeze via a config file thus making it easy to backup. I have it in my nix config so whenever I take my nixos anywhere or reinstall it I instantly have my email ready to go.

I love BallisticNG, brilliant game and if you’re a fan of Wip3out (it’s my favourite game series of all time personally) then you’ll love this.
Also thanks to the modding community for this game you can literally get every single wip3out track and ship ever created and put into BallisticNG, that’s worth the price alone.

honestly it’s better to just host your own private instance as if you want a lemmy and mastodon instance that others can also set up you not only have to admin it you also have to moderate it.
Also keep in mind it’s NOT just actual people signing up but you also have to deal with all the bots which WILL register en masse to your instances. a lot of people won’t mention this. bots flock to this stuff like flies on shit. It’s not worth it unless you plan on really dedicating the time to actively admin your instances.
I run Akkoma instead of Mastodon and Piefed instead of lemmy. both of which were easier to setup than mastodon/lemmy and less resource heavy.

it’s always disappointing when people all about FOSS and shit suggest Proton to people looking to switch from google. no, don’t do that. use Tuta or self host or ANYTHING other than Proton. it’s such a shit company that does not deserve the praise they receive.

I haven’t messed around with the Audio Visualizer but I do have Tempest 2000 and honestly it gives me a headache. the UI is absolutely dreadful and it’s constantly in your face with exploding text that takes up the entire screen. Playing the Jaguar for too long is like playing the Virtual Boy for too long. you’ll end up being bored with headache.

yes you’re right but you and I both know they aren’t concerned about that because going back to your first sentence that’s what this is really about but masked as a “won’t anyone think of the children” so it’s easier to swallow (no pun intended)

about 20+ years ago I decided to start collecting videogames. In hindsight it was a good time to start as the prices for the retro stuff was still dirt cheap. I had all the consoles. mastersystem, nes, snes, genesis, 3DO, NeoGeo, etc. A few japanese only stuff like the Wonderswan and what have you. Again via ebay and thriftstores it was all cheap.
The Jaguar for whatever reason took awhile to find at a decent price but I finally found one at a electronics thriftstore in the city. bought a few games for it also. some even still had the overlay for the controller.
all the games were bad. all of them. I bought like 10 games or so and they all sucked. My collection initially focused on collecting consoles and the “best” games for each which would progress to just trying to get as close to complete collections as possible. With the Jaguar I didn’t even bother after those 10 games. I had more games for the 3DO and PC-i compared to the Jaguar. Plus Jaguar stuff was just hard to find and I kinda figured that people didn’t bother trading them in or trying to resell them but because they sucked so much I bet you most people just tossed them.
mentioning EA games like Apex Legends removing support is laughable. Sure Alistair, ALL those EA games ALL decided around fall of 2024 to ditch support for Linux/Proton. All at the Same time. Not because EA has a deal with Microsoft/Game Pass and NOT because a few months later Microsoft announced their own Handheld with Asus. Just like Riot.
So Alistair how long until Rust is announced for Gamepass with all DLC included?
