As promised, here’s the proper announcement post :)

TL;DR: Tons of volunteers poured love and effort into Finamp over several years to redesign it into a feature-rich, well-rounded music player that is made specifically for Jellyfin and aimed at a wide range of music-lovers. Finamp is free, libre, and open source, was created manually by people who care about music, is available on all major platforms, mobile and desktop, and is much better than before!

Hi everyone! We’re super happy to finally announce that a major overhaul of Finamp, an open source music player made for Jellyfin, is finally stable and ready for everyone to use. This announcement post should give you a good overview of what Finamp is and what features it has, but head over to GitHub for the full release notes.

Finamp fills the gap in Jellyfin’s official client line-up when it comes to music. If you’ve ever tried to use any of the official Jellyfin apps for listening to music, you’ll know it doesn’t work particularly great. Finamp changes that, by giving your a powerful download feature, familiar controls, great compatibility, and effortless browsing of your music libraries.

Wait, yet another new client?!
No, not really! Finamp has been around for over five years, and many of you have probably heard of it or even given it a try in the past.
But while the old Finamp had a solid foundation and focussed on reducing the distance between you and your music as much as possible, it was honestly missing a lot. This new version adds a lot of what was needed!

What it doesn’t change though are our core values: Finamp should be a great music player for Jellyfin, that just works, and for almost anyone. If you want to stream your music from your Jellyfin server, there should be nothing speaking against Finamp as a solid, well-rounded, free and open-source package.
We did our best to keep this redesign free of regressions, for all of you who love Finamp already!

Okay great, but what’s actually new?

Wayyy too much to list!
This update really is massive, and if you’ve used Finamp before, you’ll be amazed by how much better it is now. But that doesn’t mean you won’t recognize it anymore, because we’ve tried hard to not make changes for the sake of changes. The layout is still the same, and all old features are still there.

Below you’ll find just the highlights, for the full feature list you’ll have to check out the release notes on GitHub: https://github.com/finamp-app/finamp/releases/1.0.1

Is this more AI Slop?

Nope. Just 4 years and 23 releases of slow but continuous improvements of the beta version, that we now feel confident should work for just about anyone!
Finamp is hand-made by a passionate group of contributors, and there’s tons of designing, prototyping, engineering, discussing, and testing behind all changes. We really took our time to ensure everything is well-designed, well-implemented, and well-working.

That being said, our stance on AI contributions are similar to Jellyfin’s, but we are a bit more lenient about it, since Finamp is a much smaller project. As long as contributions are reviewed, discussed, and tested at least as thoroughly as manually written code, and actually address valid issues or meaningfully improve the usage experience of Finamp for everyone, we feel like they can be accepted. But the core team will continue writing code manually for the forseeable future!

The Finamp redesign has been in beta for over two years, and we have over 1k testers that daily-drive this version. So we’re confident that you will be happy with it, too.

Awesome, where can I get it?

I’ve installed it, what now?

Aside from enjoying your music, you could come by our Finamp Beta Discord server, where you can discuss all things Finamp, Jellyfin, and music. You’ll also get quick help if you have any issues, or start contributing to Finamp’s development there.

Aside from that, have fun with Finamp, tell your friends, or post about it online, we always love seeing that!

So, what are you waiting for? Use the links above to give it a try now!
And while you’re at it, giving the project a star on GitHub would be fantastic too <3

Looks awesome, congrats on the release! Sadly my music server of choice is Navidrome… Although I think it actually recently got a setting to make it pretend to be a Jellyfin server… 🤔

wow, it looks really great, I had tried it, I don’t know, quite a while ago and it seemed like an app that was a bit incomplete but this launch is something else, it’s incredible, congratulations. Just a question/suggestion, are there plans to make some kind of version for wear os watches? It’s not that it’s a priority but I would really like to have it if possible

Hi! It seems the fdroid repo seems not to have been updated in 2 years. Is this an error?

The beta wasn’t available on F-Droid since they don’t have great support for beta channels, but now everything should be set up for F-Droid to be updated. The new version is already registered with F-Droid, but they build the app themselves instead of us submitting it, and that can take a day or two. We are definitely trying to have the F-Droid page updated too!

Cool, thanks for the awesome work.

I used finamp until some jellyfin update broke the playlists, and then kinda struggled along with the original app. Gonna give another go again, thanks

This redesign is amazing! I’ve been using the beta for a couple years, and it’s great to see this finally hit stable. Finamp is finally at the point where I don’t even miss Plexamp anymore, which was a tall order.

Huge fan of Finamp here too! I’ve been using the beta for over a year now and it’s just kept getting better and better. Really great to see this out of beta and thanks to everyone who has made this app as good as it is.
