My wife and I have been struggling to find a decent app that we can use to check things off. Primarily, we’d be using it as a grocery list, but ideally I’d love for the same app to be able to handle her long-term “honey do list” projects, and for that one cloud-syncing is a must.
So far we’ve tried Apple Notes (buggy on her phone, but not mine), Google Keep (app won’t stay in the list when phone is locked. Also, privacy. All of a sudden we’re getting ads for stuff we’ve added; no thank you), and AnyList (company keeps all the decent features behind a paywall, so I don’t know if we’d actually like it).
Thanks for your thoughts!
In many cases a Markdown checklist in a shared text file works better than those dynamic task apps. Add new tasks at the bottom of the list as they come up, and cross them off when being done. At the end of a month you start a new checklist with open tasks you consider still relevant and mark them as migrated on the old list.
# Shared Tasks ## May 2023 * [X] done task * [X] another done task * [-] deleted task * [>] migrated task (to next month) ## July 2023 * [ ] migrated task (from last month) * [ ] new open task - comment - another comment - [ ] nested task A - [ ] nested task B * [X] some done task
This way all you need is Syncthing or a cloud storage with a shared folder.
By migrating you’ll get a fresh list every month, and a monthly protocoll of what has been done in the previous months.
Hi, I haven’t seen it suggested yet so I’ll go ahead: Simplenote (https://simplenote.com). My SO and I use it for shopping and haven’t had any issues.
Looks great! I’ll check it out, thanks.
https://usememos.com for something simple if you can selfhost the server.
Check out Joplin. It is pretty powerful, but can also just be used for simple checklists.
I use a combination of OpenTasks, Joplin, and the standard calendar app on my Android phone. I sync that through Nextcloud with OpenSync. On the desktop I use Joplin and Thunderbird. Thunderbird handles the task and calendar data.
Joplin is a note taking app but it does have to do but I have never tried them. I tend to just make lists in my notes directly. Then for repeating or scheduled to do stuff I use OpenTasks and for appointments the calendar.
Thanks!
We’ve been using https://www.ourgroceries.com for years. It’s not designed for tasks (could work, never tried), but it handles grocery lists well. Multiple stores, attach a photo to an item, setting the aisle in the store to optimize shopping.
Attaching photos is a definite plus! I’ll check it out
That looks pretty cool, although it doesn’t appear to be FOSS. If I could use an app like that and self host the server or use next cloud to sync it that would be very cool. I noticed in their FAQ they’re going to stop supporting nest and Google home voice commands, so if it were foss and you could integrate the server with home assistant that would’ve been super cool.
I really like Nextcloud Tasks. It can sync with many apps: Tasks.org (Android), Reminders (Apple devices), Endeavour (Linux), and more.
Also you can have shared lists such as a shared grocery list that can both add two while still maintaining separate accounts.
If you dont want to host your own Nextcloud, there are third party providers you can use such as woelkli.com.
If you know what F-Droid is, there are plenty of shopping list apps on there. All FOSS.
For grocery, KitchenOwl. And you can add custom items. Doesn’t really work as a todo list though.
Different than what I expected, but could definitely work for groceries. Thanks!
