The horrible Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) is once again moving forward in Congress, so now’s a key time to contact your Senators and Representative. https://stopkosa.com has a summary of why this bill is so bad, including its harmfulness on LGBTQ+ youth, as well as a form to contact your Senators. But Republicans are just fine with bills that are harmful to LGBTQ+ youth, so they may well see that as a good thing!

Here’s an alternate script designed for Republicans legislators. You can use it to call – for a phone call or email – from jamie quinn on Bluesky (shared with permission).

You can call the Senate switchboard at United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Or, use EFF’s page.

And doing that to democrats is probably a matter of changing attorneys names and adding abortion, trans kids and preservatives

Yes, exactly. For Senators who support LGBTQ+ rights and reproductice rights (or at least say that they do), focusing on the threat anti-trans AGs can be very effective; In Washington state, we put enough pressure on Cantwell last fall about the LGBTQ+ issues that she mentioned it in the hearing (as did Markey). 5calls and EFF’s scripts and emails are written to appeal to legislators from both parties (so just talk about the harms to kids and threats from state AGs in general terms), which makes sense for a one-size-fits-all form, but customizing it to your Senators’ priorities can make a lot of sense.

It’s bad for every single normal internet user in the country. It’s just a matter of reading the room for each state or municipality, and picking an issue that they statistically care about that could feasibly be impacted by this law, which is easy to do because the law is terrifyingly broad.

This is very smart. You’ll never win over Republicans by asking them to be good people, but getting them to choose between a law they want and protecting the 2nd amendment is a very tough trap to put them in.

…but you can manipulate through emotion, and the 2nd amendment is a touchstone for a lot of people.

You are going to be sadly disappointed when you realize these folks are inoculated against any such ability to correlate reality to the individual issues they’ve been told to support. Look at “Religious Freedom” the fools still don’t understand that if they get to push theirs by Gov. action so does The Satanic Temple. They are stunned that if you can ban books for sexuality that includes the Bible. These folks are not in any way able to understand the nuance you are proposing.

Republicans do not give one fuck about what anyone wants. Especially their constituents.

This is all assuming that they make their own independent decisions (ie, not being lobbied) and that they actually care.

Just move out of that god-forsaken country anyways.

From my experience, they ignore the content of your communication and regurgitate party-line garbage. They do not care.

Add some stuff about Satanism and trans people if you really want to kick your Republican lawmakers in the outrage bone.

Republican AGs have already said they’ll use KOSA to block anything trans related, so maybe don’t bring that up when talking to Republican senators.
