I keep seeing encodes that take a dolby vision profile 5 stream and combine it with a hdr10 (and/or) hdr10+ stream. I see everyone saying that this helps with compatability. So if you have DV device, it’ll play DV, otherwise it’ll play HDR10/HDR10+.

I have been told that this messes up the original artistic intent of the Dolby Vision Profile 5 stream because it’s using 2 different sources with 2 different gradings. So my question is - if you have a DV device, is the DV profile 5 grading being changed at all from the original? in other words, when it plays back in DV, is it using the HDR10 base layer or is it only using the DV profile 5 info? Hope that makes sense.

I am asking because it seems like ALL of the new DV encodes I’m seeing are in this hybrid format. If it does indeed change the image from the original intent then I have no clue why all of the current encoders are using this format…

It’s done usually because of compatability. You can take a base layer HDR/HDR10 video, then extract the DV rpu, sync it, and inject it into the HDR stream. To answer your question, it is using both the HDR base layer with DV dynamic metada.

For webs, it’s usually P5, and the conversion is apparently good enough that it doesn’t make a difference for most people. For P7, you are going to lose the enhancement layer when encoding, but that’s the price you pay for saving space.

There are instances, especially with discs, when the film is indeed graded differently, but the good encoders/remuxers pay attention to this.

P7 has an additional layer, the enhancement layer. It’s currently not possible (far as I know) to preserve this when encoding, so it is discarded. You end up with the encoded base layer which has the DV rpu injected.

Thanks for the info! Would you personally grab hybrids where they took a streaming show that was P5 and combined it with a hdr10 stream? Or would you prefer the original P5? I’m asking because I’m literally seeing every single P5 TV show encoded as this hybrid P8. I have no idea why no one is posting original P5 encodes. It’s infuriating.
