The worst piece of tech that I have ever owned in my life is a CD Cleaner I bought from GameStop back in the day. That shit was straight up a sacrificial altar. It never cleaned. Only consumed.
Oh shit, I remember those. They “cleaned” by using an abrasive spray to “polish” the CDs. Those things were straight-up evil.
This was the second half of my problem honestly, I can’t for the life of me figure out how to 3d model stuff. I’ve gone through tutorial after tutorial so clearly it’s me.

I went a little crazy on 3d printing during covid. I had a single printer prior but purchased two more. I haven’t printed on ANY of them in like 2 years. I end up just printing stupid shit or because I go so long between printing wasting way too much time to get everything dialed back in. Now I don’t even know what my slicing settings were and I would have to probably start from scratch. I should probably just sell my printers…
Yeah I’ve seen a lot of dumb LLM implementations, but this one may take the cake. I don’t get why tech leaders see “AI” and go yes, please throw that at everything. I know it’s the current buzzword but it’s been proven OVER AND OVER just in the past couple of months that it’s not anywhere close to ready for prime-time.
This is the real reason I have one of those damn mouse jigglers. The timeouts on our laptop are CRAZY short, like 5 minutes tops. Just stepping away for some coffee or to take a shit then I have to re-authenticate. Heaven forbid I make myself a toasted bagel or something!
It’s even worse as I work 95% inside multiple virtual machines in the cloud that also timeout (and in some cases shut down) so there are multiple layers of password +2fa just to get back to whatever I was doing.
So yeah, $10 USB device from Amazon allows me to not spend a hour a day just having to re-auth.
Yep, the fab plant is a little east of Columbus (just south of where I live actually). This is one of like 2 dozen “super loads” that has to make its way from the Ohio River up to the plant. I swear there is a website somewhere that keeps track of when the are coming, the routes they take, and the closures involved but my Google-fu is failing me now.
This article is short on details but what I really want to know is WHERE is that data coming from and how the fuck does United have access to it?! Also, a follow-up question would be how does one ensure they don’t get access to that data? Is that even possible anymore?

I work for a 350k+ company doing grid mod for energy utilities. The head of our division had an “all hands” meeting earlier in the week saying based on client requirements we all need to be in an office or on the clients site.
The head of our group of ~20 (my bosses boss) scheduled a meeting right after and said ignore that. Our team is kicking ass and our current client has not such requirements (other than onsite at their location for training/go-lives which is reasonable). Furthermore, he said unless it was out of his hands this could be the normal with new clients.
We have a killer team from all over the US (many of whom are nowhere near the client or our company offices). This team would dissolve quickly if that mandate ever hit us.
My point is, there ARE still people in upper(ish) management that understand to keep top talent you have to be willing to accept or embrace work from wherever. Hell, during the last go-live last hear he basically said unless absolutely required he didn’t WANT any of us on-site with the client. He wanted us all comfy, no jet-lag, in our normal settings to be able to troubleshoot issues. Granted, I worked nearly 80 hours that week, but that’s not a normal week. I usually work 30-40.

Agreed, custodians (usually) wouldn’t refer to themselves that way. Without them though, trash doesn’t make it to the point of disposal. Which is a break in the chain. We could debate the finer points I’m sure, but it’s about bed time for me and I have an early AM meeting with offshore.

Depends on where you draw the line. Janitors for instance are usually paid a pittance. As are cleaning crews that vacuum the vast offices spaces around the country.
If you are talking about CDL drivers that collect trash cans then yeah, they tend to be paid well. Without all the pieces of the puzzle though the system breaks down.
Plumbers, as it turns out, are paid quite well since nobody wants to go into the trades currently.
To expand a hair on this, modern waste disposal. So with plumbing comes sewage. Then the close child is refuse removal. We literally cannot live (healthily) without these things.
Side-bar, the folks that power waste removal are VASTLY under-paid.

Ridiculous: One day when using Ubuntu, the entire system went upside-down. As in, everything was working perfectly fine, but literally the screen was upside-down. After much Googling I had no luck figuring it out, then I accidentally found the solution - I’d plugged a PS4 controller into the USB on the laptop to charge it, and for some reason Ubuntu interpreted the gyroscope on the controller as “rotate the screen display” so when I moved it, the screen spun round. I only figured it out by accident when I plugged it back it and it spun back to normal lol.

+1 to audiobookshelf, it’s an amazing project! My wife loves it too, she can browse through the collection and listen to whatever without having to look through a bunch of folders and whatnot. I recently added my brother and mother to the server and they have appreciated it too!
I take offense to some of that, but I applied to be an admin back in Q3 of last year. After the video interview I got ghosted. Thought I would give this a shot, had another video interview, and yeah I’m not expecting much. So yeah, I’m not even sure the process actually does anything other than waste time.
I do have a very well paying job, family, but you may have called me out on the “no life” thing… Though I do have a car that’s become a bit of a project so I don’t waste as much time on “IT” shit.
