Thankfully there is an archived version and it’s every bit as pretentious and dumb as its thumbnail and its title suggest. And then they have the nerve to sign as if they were speaking for Artists writ large.

Technology@lemmy.world•“thegentlemanpervert” producing AI CSAM is a NJ prosecutor, say copsEnglish
3·9 hours agoWell good. The sentence I quoted from only talks about accusations though. And the blurb seems to contradict itself in the very next sentence, citring several more “rare” examples.
I have nothing against ArsTechnica (yet) so I guess it’s just bad phrasing.
Thanks for sharing.

Technology@lemmy.world•Two German courts now hold Google liable for what its AI overviews sayEnglish
61·9 hours agoGoogle is directly liable for the content of its AI-generated search summaries.
(…)
The judges classified AI Overviews not as mere search results but as Google’s own statements, meaning the company itself has to answer for them.
GOOD. The world is not Big Tech’s sandbox.

11·3 hours agoNo way this goes through in the EU. Frankly this should be against the law in any country. It’s one thing to say “Whatever you do on our platform belongs to us”, but it’s a whole other thing to do this.
And then they’re going to whine about the EU waging war against the US again.
Please let me out of this universe, I’ll try a parallel one.

61·2 days agoSame with Commodore and my Japanese drum machine from the 90s.
Stands to reason that VHS would put that “on steroids”, relatively speaking.

Technology@lemmy.world•Did “Russian bot traffic” really disappear after Ukrainian strikes on Yandex servers?English
696·7 days agoThanks. OPs should do that anyhow.
It stands to reason that attacking a few servers won’t stop all of Russia’s hybrid warfare, but it also stands to reason that there is some effect.
In any case, I hope Ukraine continues to succesfully attack (hopefully without civilian casualties) Russian infrastructure. We all benefit from that.

Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon uses its tracking data to guess whether shoppers have a flat butt and no friendsEnglish
5·11 days agoThe headline makes it sound as if this was a new development, or as if that’s about all the tracking Amazon does. Neither is true.
Several people in the past decade have investigated what exactly Amazon has on you by asking for their private data. That said, this really could be news to Verge readers, esp. those that are unable to look for news sources outside the USA’s borders.

276·10 days agotl;dr: it’s about the timezone database (edit: among other projects) which is “maintained by a group of volunteers. Originally founded by Arthur David Olson, the project is now led by Paul Eggert and Tim Parenti.”
I know that this usually comes down to one person doing a lion’s share of the work. This applies to so many FOSS pojects, especially when their impact bleeds over into the non-FOSS world (and by now I think we can include Android in that). Yet the world of FOSS has never broken down even when one of these "one person"s quits. We know. But it might be scawy for people who live in proprietary la-la-land.
Don’t get me wrong, this is important. But I find the article with all its dark javascript magic a little hyperbolic, sensationalist. Even the “plain” reading page is. Gigantic headers, large numbers etc.
I will also add that the tz database isn’t huge, and it isn’t prone to constant change. It makes for great numbers but the whole issue is pretty pedestrian if you look a little closer. How many parts of closed systems that many people rely on are maintained by only 1 person (who would promptly be replaced by corporate if they quit)? I guess we just don’t have so much data on that because - surprise - they’re not Open.
I could’ve written a similar article, but I would have written it differently.
edit: I stand corrected on the crossed-out bit.
I’ll also state very clearly that I agree with the topic, just not the way it is presented.
And that I was fully aware that this is not only about the TZ databse when I wrote this.

Yes, we want to know how the sausage is made, just like with all FOSS.
what does the community actually expect from devs
Don’t flood the zone.
It really isn’t so long ago when making an app required various stages of completion and testing, usually including other people. I expect from devs that they follow that well-established road and stop with the silly “who has the time” argument I’m hearing so often lately. Sorry, you didn’t actually say that.
Not sure why we should be interested in the Polish though. Are you from there?
I’m feel you’re jumping right into the problem from some tutorial or not-so-common knowledge. We do not have that context.
Is “x11-user” defined anywhere? sddm must know what to do with that setting.

I’ll add to that:
Does me lending a book from the library not count?
The article is too much about direct remuneration. It reeks of a poor artist’s bitterness, but also of a Yuppie’s view of the world.
It’s not all about the money, and every artist should know that.
The article is just ragebait. And it’s 10 months old. It speaks poorly of OP that they felt the need to share it. There are much better ways of starting this discussion.
