I have used Pop! which is basically Ubuntu but very polished and customized to enhance what’s already there. But as others said it’s not strictly a distro thing it’s Desktop Environment and also the graphics system I’m probably not using the right terminology. But Wayland is very good with touchscreen and I’ve read that X11 has some support as well (?).
You’re being logical. And you’re looking at the big picture. In budget allocated resources, they can only look at their own small box, and not think on a larger scale. Also, the people making these decisions are usually dimwits too.
Well, then they hire based on paying the lowest, then yeah, you get amateurs who don’t know shit. Can’t tell you how many situations I’ve encountered in environments like government, educational, etc. facilities where I.T. is run by the cheapest labor available. And the net result is everything runs piecemeal and haphazardly. Oh, and the average user has WAY too much privilege because they have no idea how to properly restrict access. I see it often.
First game I ever played that had that had an arena where you’re running around fighting enemies and the emcee bad guy was like the dude from The Running Man, and he would yell “TOTAL CARNAGE! IIIIIIIII LOVE IT!!!” damn what was that game called? SMASH TV!
Verbatim in my experience have consistently been the best of everything they’ve made. Also usually the most expensive so they’re not really what most people will buy, unfortunately. Memorex has been a pretty good mid-range, I’d even put it just below Verbatim. But when people buy these shit TDK stuff… you’re not gonna be happy.
Anyway these days you can stick what… 2TB yet? on a microSD. I know that discs offer the not subject to magnetic damage but still… they fail after age far earlier than promised when they were sold.

You really can’t run it in Bottles, or a VM of Windows? I’ve managed the occasional peripheral using a VM.
I used to love making text adventure with AGT the Adventure Game Toolkit. I’ve wanted for some time already to learn to make stuff with still images and click zones which is essentially the evolution of the text adventure. The audience for this stuff is tiny, but I’d still love to get back into making text adventure. If there’s an easy to learn equivalent of AGT that can be made either web-hosted or somehow platform-independent I’d love to do that. AGT was a real breeze to learn and it’s a terrific creative outlet.
Anything more sophisticated is out of my league as I’m not a pro coder; my development experience is limited to an array of projects in VB6, the biggest of which was a companion software for Team Fortress Classic to customize scripts and per-class macros. It was called TFCompanion. Got 1,000 downloads roughly. But I digress.

Hey, total stranger chiming in here just to say that I don’t think the issue is that OP feels like they’re owed feedback, nor that there aren’t plenty of others who want it as well; I think it’s just gotten very prohibitive on the internet where the first priority of any platform has become the legal protections, and so where once there was a flourishing free exchange of ideas on the internet where the knowledge and communication was the priority (anyone remember USENET), it has devolved into lawyers banning everything they can think of all to keep things protected, and so this budding writer can’t just easily find a place to say, “hey everyone, what do you think of this?”

Thanks this is what I am looking for because everyone else misunderstood that I could run software on the tablet to “host” it. I think there’s some limitation of the USB architecture that makes what I want not really possible except with some very specific computers. I understand it but at the same time I don’t understand why. You can’t output raw signals to USB in a way that something on the other end will just hear that data as pure data. There needs to be some kind of mutual agreement on protocol at the fundamental level, if that’s a sloppy way to phrase it.
Thanks I’m gonna look into this because it might be worth a small investment to be able to do this going forward with other devices.

It’s not an anything tablet it’s x86 CPU architecture can run pretty much anything. Originally had a sluggish Win10 but I managed to install a Linux distro. But the idea is to do it without any software on the tablet to run, like even to bring up the BIOS.
For reading it’s easy enough to find an old Android phone that is large and just throw Lineage or something on there.
Personally I have an older ASUS C7. I rooted it and stripped away everything non-essential. I have a huge SD card in there with absolutely all my ebooks and comics, and I keep it in airplane mode. The battery keeps for months. Literally.
That’s why my main desktop has 32GB and my laptop 16. We’re at the point that these are minimum comfortable amounts.
Way back in the early '90s I was using what passed for the internet. Email, Usenet, ftp sites and all text websites before they started embedding graphics. Browsers were very odd back then.
Hey, like I said, great info for me to learn because I don’t know. I was only saying that I don’t mind because my situation is fine with it. Thanks for the info, it’s interesting. I’m sure for any situation there’s a better and worse solution and I’m sure that for any solution, there’s a situation that either likes or dislikes the approach.
Yeah but that’s a huge benefit already. I am not savvy enough in the development side to know whether that’s a reward that justifies any of the frustrations people have. Personally I don’t really mind varying methods to do any one job, as long as it’s well-documented, easily managed, and does not create a higher load on the system in any respect.
I don’t really care about all these different things, as long as none of them become a crazy confusing mess, like Windows DLLs.
Seriously, I don’t know if this is precisely accurate but definitely don’t spin down. Data errors, software problems if it has to wait for spin up and then something experiences a timeout.
I’ve had some drives spinning for like twenty years without any problems.
