If you play on a machine that is not connected to internet, then by all means there is no reason to switch. But of you are connected to the internet, then those system pose security risks and you would be better off having an up to date system. If Win 10 wasn’t EOL then maybe the advice to upgrade to Win10 would be solid.

I truly believe Nobara to be better suited for gaming than Bazzite. I don’t really get the hype. But then again, to each his own distro.

If you want to repair your computer, look at the specs of RAM first. If it’s LPDDR then you know it’s not gonna be repairable because it would be soldered. If it’s DDR the computer might be good to repair and upgrade.

Laptop tends to be harder to repair in general. Those who can be repaired tend to be costly.

If you want to know if it can be repaired and to what extent, connect to a VPN in France and browse the models. They are required by law to display a repairability index so you know how much of your laptop can be replaced and how easily. The higher the number, the better.

My recommendation would be to buy a Dell or a Thinkpad. Those things perform well and tend to last longer, even when they tend to be costly when new. MSI is a shitshow, don’t fall for their laptop scam.

If you want to limit or stop the wiretapping go for a Linux distro (Zorin for anything or Nobara for gaming) rather than Windows.

I have been soloing Linux for 5 years now.

But tbh, I have had almost no issues regarding suspend/hibernate on Windows. On Linux, on the other hand… For starters, hibernate never worked for me.

I get what you are saying but at the same time I have a MSI laptop that I bought in 2020. It has a nvidia video card.

Bloody thing was always a pain in the arse. I couldn’t plug the HDMI to the TV and get it working straight away.

Everytime I wanted to play on my TV I had to plug the HDMI, go to the device management, uninstall intel video drivers, same with the nvidia drivers then reinstall first the nvidia driver then the intel one.

And that only worked until I turned the PC or it went into hibernation.

Now that it’s running on Win11, no amount of driver reinstall can get it to work. It’s laptop screen or bust.

With Linux I just plug the HDMI in and it works. The only limitation is that I can’t get it to work with 4K60, as it should. It only works with 1080p30.

But I guess I can’t always win…

It’s a 20 years old console. Nobody expects Nintendo to patch it. Even less to play older games of a competitor…

I have found that sometimes, old games run better on linux via Lutris than on Windows. If it’s a 16 bit game you should give it a try. If it doesn’t work, VM might be your only answer.

This is the most accurate answer. I have found Nobara to be everything I could ask for gaming.

I might add that, if he also wants a normal desktop experience, separate from gaming, he should consider trying Zorin or Mint.

Iirc, Zorin comes with nvidia/amd drivers already installed and the experience is close enough to Windows that he might stay on Linux.
