  • Reading all these comments it’s clear that a lot of people have unrealistic ideas regarding what Lemmy and the Fediverse are supposed to be (or maybe it’s me with weird ideas).

The Fediverse is just a bunch of apps that can all communicate with each other through a shared protocol. There is no requirement for them to be free speech platforms or host everything. The whole purpose of defederation supports the idea that instances are free to associate or disassociate with whichever instances they want. Furthermore, nearly every guide I read on joining Lemmy state that you should choose instances to join based on shared ideals/beliefs.

For everyone saying “I’m leaving lemmy.world” I say “Good. That’s what you’re supposed to do.” When the instance you join no longer aligns with what you want, you go to another instance and then you’ll be back to viewing all the communities you want to see. That is what the Fediverse is all about and how it’s designed.

  • The command line is always going to turn people away from Linux. I’ve only had to use the command line to fix a windows issue once in the past 10 years while I regularly have to use it every time I have to work with Linux.

People like convenience and will almost always go with the more convenient option even if it’s not the best option.

Until the majority of issues can be solved using point and click (and help forums show that method over command line), Linux will always lag behind Mac and Windows.

  • I figure out what I was doing wrong. I was tapping on the picture which was taking me to the original URL (which was on lemmy.ml) instead of opening it up through lemmy.world.

Now I just have to figure out why I can’t see your comment through Connect. I see the comment in my inbox and when I select it I get taken to this post but I don’t see this comment or any of the comments in the chain starting with my original comment. I had to post this reply through the web browser.
