  • sexualizing (and thus degrading)

That core attitude is a big part why I can’t respect this new secular Mormonism. There’s nothing degrading about sexualization. The very idea of it is tied to the idea that a woman’s worth is tied up in her virginity, which is a concept born from the patriarchal ownership of women. Sexualization is only degrading to property because it reduces the value of the property. Anyone who claims they don’t see women as property but that sexualization does degrade women is incredibly confused.

  • their dopamine-receptors were completely captured by pornhub, that it was a polite way to bop them on the nose for being a gross gooner in completely non-sexual contexts.

Even if true, I stand by what I said.

Anyone not radically sex-positive has the same effect on society as a whole as the most vehement anti-porn crusader, because puritanism is the cultural default anywhere the spiritual descendants of those bronze age goat fucking child sellers have been able to rule (almost everywhere now).

  • It’s really all our faults. The first time someone used the phrase “horny jail” unironically and wasn’t slapped into the following week, we invited this. The first time someone complained about a sex scene in a movie and wasn’t shunned from their entire social circle and relegated to hanging out with the Boomer ladies at the local church, we began building the world we’re trapped in.

And the people in here defending this new secular Puritan paradigm all sound fucking insufferable. It doesn’t matter if you’re an upright prude because your gullible enough to think sex makes God angry or if you’re an upright prude because you think it’s a feminist position. Either way you’re still a jackass who’s clinging to a sexual morality invented by bronze age goat herders to maximize the prices they could get for selling their teenage daughters to their middle aged friends.

  • The Arkham series was already an exercise in great story hiding behind bad gameplay. But I don’t even know if that held true for Arkham Knight, because 3 minutes into the thing you get put in a driving mini game that has absolutely shitty controls and is required to progress into the actual story. Since that proved impossible for me, I just wasted the price of the game and now I’ve gone from disdain for Rockstar as a studio to outright hate. Making the combat system in a Batman game into Dance Dance Revolution was stupid enough, but unskippable cross-genre skill gates are unforgivable.

Related, but slightly more forgiveable bcs it isn’t required to progress the main story, The Pitt DLC for Fallout 3 has a section where the designers suddenly felt like Fallout had an a engine capable of being a 3D Platformer, and that people who’d already spent 30+ hours in Fallout 3 would enjoy having to do precision platform jumps to get to the good loot.

Basically, if you suddenly have a mini game or section that belongs to an entirely different genre, don’t force people to engage with that, some of us hate driving games, some of us hate platformers, and I’m pretty sure nobody at all wanted a driving minigame in their Batman Rhythm-Soulslike.

  • Weird, I know, but no. You can’t have effeftove e-commerce really without the buyer and seller knowing each other without the use of middlemen who’ll raise costs and wind up knowing more about both parties than they’d have found out about each other the old fashioned way.

If you want to buy anonymously, you have to do it with cash, in person.

  • Diet Soda is essentially just flavored seltzer water with more flavor than the drinks actually labelled as flavored seltzer.

A lot of people in this thread don’t seem to understand that.

Most of the people touring horrible health risks have conflated diet sodas with sugary sodas, some have misunderstood some genuine studies on diet soda. The reason diet sodas correlate strongly with certain health conditions is primarily selection bias. Many diet soda drinkers also eat high-fat, high-sodium, US-style fast food diet, which is actually pretty hard in your body. Also Diet Soda’s sweet taste can trigger heightened insulin production, because your body expects it to be full of sugar, and that heightened insulin can cause sugar cravings, and some people then consume more sugar satisfying that craving that would have been in a regular soda anyway.

Diet Soda is not a diuretic, it hydrates you just as well as tea, seltzer, or even a slightly smaller glass of plain ol water. There’s some unanswered questions about the artificial sweeteners and their long term effects, but any of the really bad stuff they’ve found in actual studies has been at far higher concentration that a person would consume even if Diet Soda was their only fluid intake.

  • Mayonnaise on grilled cheese is an abomination.

For the absolute best grilled cheese ever just put sliced cheese between two slices of bread, drop 2 tbsp (28.5g for those of you not using freedom units) of butter in a pan just hot enough to make it sizzle, put your sandwich in the melted butter and flip after 3 minutes.

Edit: got so worked up about the mayo abomination I forgot what I came here to say. My food hack is self rising flour in anything that used the flour, salt, baking powder trio. Easier, quicker, and no chance of messing up the ratio and getting crackers instead of biscuits.

  • Ok, I get it, you believe very passionately in bronze age sexual mores. You don’t have a persuasive case to make that the things you’ve listed here are unique to sex work, nor have you addressed my point about other forms of exploitive labor and marginalized people. I suspect that’s because deep down you know there is no case to make there, unless you start from the position that sex is special and magical, and you’re simply not used to arguing against someone who explicitly rejects that presupposition.

Also. My previous Links were from university websites. Research articles about published peer reviewed articles and Wikipedia articles to define definitions.

Literally everyone can just scroll up a few replies to see that it’s exactly what I said: two Wikipedia articles, one opinion piece by an anti sex work crusader org with literal cops and Neoliberal politicians on its board, and a study that doesn’t control for any confounding factors (most such studies are funded by the LDS or Catholic Church, so they don’t control for those factors bcs they know they won’t get the results they’re being paid for if they do. Didn’t read far enough to know of your study is one of those, but statistically speaking the odds are good).

Have you ever considered which systematic aspects of our society fuel the patriarchy and inequality or do you think it just appeared one day and stays around for no reason?

I’ve read extensively on the subject and I will say again what I’ve said several times in this thread: 100% of patriarchy comes from the belief that sex is special and magical and from that the ideas of virginity and purity come to guarantee paternity and maximize the selling price of daughters, from there comes almost all of the forms of patriarchy.

Now if you can explain without any magical thinking or putting sex into a special category just why you think that sex workers arearginallzed and exploited in a way that is materially different from undocumented farm workers, please do so. If not, please shut the hell up, because it’s now painfully obvious to everyone that your magical thinking doesn’t hold up to any scrutiny.
