The reality is simple. Their are “bad guys” on both sides. The “good guys” are stuck between them. The degree to which one is badder than the other really shouldn’t matter. Anyone making a living prolonging conflict should just be removed from the gene pool. Ideally by locking large numbers of them in a room with very limited supplies, just enough to fight over.

Sure. Could happen. Imagine trump wins somehow. Then imagine he orders the military to help the Russians or even just orders some people round up like he promises. His disdain for our military is clear. Some generals will follow because he is the president. But others will refuse. And Trump is dumb enough to order his generals to arrest the other generals. Boom, civil war. Or if trump loses… his followers will look for someone else to follow. If someone actually competent shows up, similar path, just 4 years later.

More than that. You probably use them in public, where there are tons of cameras. So if you forget you phone in say a restaurant, odds are they have video of you unlocking it.

Honestly, you don’t have to create a kill switch. Most stuff will fall apart due to dependency on manual intervention. Usually because there isn’t enough staff to automate it. Tech debt comes for everyone.

Yeah, it isn’t a new thing. It’s just that the pundits think there are people in dark caves writing code all day with zero human contact. Hasn’t been like that for a long time. Coding is the easy part of the job now for the vast majority if competent coders. Figuring out how to balance what the users want, and what the prod7ct manager tells you to do is the really hard part.

They aren’t wrong, just late. Coding is already dead. Most coders I know spend very little time writing new code. Meeting/discussions about requirements, debugging, fighting with pipelines or tests. I once read that a good programmer writes 10 to 100 lines of fully functional, tested, working, and meeting the actual need code a day. I believe it.

I was thinking, imagine the media companies demand the power company turn off your power because you downloaded a pirated movie. Or gas stations stop selling gas to you because you speed.

I use Firefox as my main on my home pc. I keep running into things that don’t work on Firefox. Not by saying they don’t, just by throwing errors that make it sound like I put the wrong data in a field. Is there some magic extension to fix that?

I know one family like that. Kids prefer activities to phones. But the rest not so much. The kids get together and do things in spurts separated by phone time. Usually whatever they are doing, at least one of them is on the phone. So it is really kid dependent.

Oh I agree with you on sex work in the present day. I just go a step further for the future. People should work because they want to, not have to. The value of a person’s work should not determine the value of the person. One thing I do wonder though. If we didn’t have to work, many people still would because they enjoy the work. Would people do sex work in that situation? If they want to, I support thier right to do so. But it was a thought that came to me reading this post, that I haven’t fully explored in my head yet.

I wonder how many of the over 1000 VPs will get canned. You read that right. I worked there at the beginning of my career. I know a lot of people who are now VPs. Only one of them was actually any good. One guy couldn’t even manage his own staff meetings when he was a first line manager. Nice guy, not dumb or anything, but not brilliant, and a terrible organizer.

Yeah, see that is the issue. The social logins (though not for anything real money related) and the photo backups are so well integrated. Nothing really competes. My personal emails are even less of a concern to me than the rest.

I use Gmail, and am concerned about the same thing. But of the alternatives I don’t know any that have wide support for social logins, which are damn convient.

Simple. Been a QA, worked with QAs, been to conferences with QAs. We tell the boss we can’t cover the whole thing, they say just cover the most important stuff. The general advice from veteran QAs is to not even say that to the boss. They know, and they can’t get more resources. So veteran QAs advise others to get a feel for how much time you can spend on a thing before they start complaining that you are holding it up. Then work within that timeframe. As long as nothing major gets through it’s all good. Your view is one of survivor bias. Nothing big got through, but that doesn’t mean it was completely tested. Its good enough, untill it isn’t. Side note, I’ve seen product managers close bugs, not because they weren’t bugs, but because they were bad enough, compared to features they thought would sell more software. This was an outlier, usually they just wait a few years and mass close everything that is X years old. That, I have personally seen everywhere I have worked.
