  • i recommend reading 1984 to get a more refined look at the author’s views. A lot of people read animal farm first and think the premise purely amounts to ‘communism bad’ and stop there. Whereas i suspect most people that started with 1984 eventually still read animal farm and come away with a more nuanced take for both.

  • I just got insulted & falsely accused of downvoting someone yesterday. I had chose to give them a second downvote to prove that the first one didn’t come from my account. I admit, I have always been curious about the specific sources of votes but If I’m being completely honest, I don’t think actually knowing would leave me better off. I think people already read too much into these votes in the first place and it gives the ego-maniacs too much to obsess over.

  • I double checked and wrote up the explanation in a different post but at least according to Wikipedia, you are correct.

The simple explanation is that the classy drug known as “Cocaine” is technically Cocaine Hydrochloride. The previously mentioned reaction removes the Hydrogen and Chlorine ions leaving you with Cocaine without the “Hydrochloride” aka Freebase Cocaine aka Crack.

  • It’s chemically different

    “Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3, common baking soda) is a base used in the preparation of crack, although other weak bases may substitute for it.[7][8] The net reaction when using sodium bicarbonate is Coc-H+Cl− + NaHCO3 → Coc + H2O + CO2 + NaCl With ammonium bicarbonate: Coc-H+Cl− + NH4HCO3 → Coc + NH4Cl + CO2 + H2O With ammonium carbonate: 2(Coc-H+Cl−) + (NH4)2CO3 → 2 Coc + 2 NH4Cl + CO2 + H2O”

You’re removing a Hydrogen and a Chlorine ion respectively. I’m not a chemist but I’d guess that makes the base cocaine molecule more bioavailable. I think the confusion stems from the fact that conventional cocaine is not true-cocaine (it’s Cocaine Hydrochloride) in the sense that crack is. An alternative commonly used name for crack is “freebase cocaine” which would suggests it’s more exact nature.

  • I approve. It think it should be legalized. I’m not sold on the libertarian view of complete decriminalization though. Capitalism is innately exploitative, and If it’s not regulated to maintain workers’ safety, and rights, then I’d expect working conditions to be just as bad if not worse for the laborers, which I think is a big reason why so many people want to keep it outlawed in the first place.
