  • It’s a nice gesture, but this is exactly why a lot of people don’t like giving away free stuff. It’s why IT departments are hesitant to give away equipment they are throwing out because some users will come back and expect free tech support. Not saying you’re against doing anything like that, but just that asshole companies like Microsoft make this so damn difficult nowadays that doing as others suggested here to create a new Microsoft account for this is going to get you calls inevitably in the future when they forget the password or run into other issues. And if not, it’ll likely end with them not using it because of the hassle or throwing it out.

I hate to sound negative because it’s an awesome gesture on your part to do and I’m sure in a perfect world, it would be wonderful for some of the residents to get to use something like that.

But since it’s not like the old days of having a CD you pop in but a digital app connected to an online account, you’ll need to do somethings that may cause confusion. It sounds like you’d have to do as others suggest and create a new Microsoft account and have a license for that game on there. Or get a GamePass subscription on that account that would allow access to Flight Simulator and more, but that would mean a perpetual donation for them to use it too.

Someone may come along and suggest a pirated copy of Flight Simulator, but I would strongly advise against that because it can put the home at legal risk if discovered and can cause other issues like if it gets patched in the future.

  • Since I prefer controller over mouse and keyboard, it’s a lot of games pre-Xbox One era for me. But that is subjective because a lot of people prefer mouse and keyboard.

Games like Oblivion never had a proper way of getting a controller to work with them on the PC release and any tries to get it to work flat out suck. I’ve tried Steam’s button mapping and even that doesn’t work for a lot of these games. But working through an emulator helps translate my controller to the game with almost no issues.

Considering how the Steam Deck plays and you’re usually using it as a controller unless docked, this would be nearly any game from this time period.

  • This is Grubhub and all those other apps when I get a craving at home and don’t want to drive or can’t drive because I’m not sober. I browse through and see some stuff that looks decent and get all the way to the end to find out that my $10 worth of food is now going to be $25 plus tip to be delivered to me. So I just close the app and then get one of those stupid notifications “hey you still have stuff in your cart! Come back and finish your order”.

    No, fuck you.

  • Most recent, but not the absolute worst, was ripping my pants at work. I bent down to pick something up and heard the rip. It was over my crotch region too. Thankfully I had boxers on but was still pretty embarrassed.

Thankfully my boss was cool about it and I just drove over to Costco down the street and got a new pair and changed in the back of my car. He make a joke when I got back which was fine.

  • I’m using an app on my iPhone called NFC Tools right now to do this so I can get you the numbers.

I just scanned one of my Amiibo tags (Legend of Zelda - Link, 8-bit) and it says that it is 540 bytes in size. This was one I copied over to an existing tag. It says it is 135 pages (4 bytes each).

Meanwhile scanning my debit card doesn’t seem to give me a size…

Here are screenshots so you can see what I see:

    Amiibo

    Debit card

And I also captured the signal when trying to do Apple Pay from my Apple Watch and this was the result

    Apple Watch

I’m guessing these are encrypted which is why I don’t get the same data and makes sense now that I think about it. You could do some heavy damage to someone through this method if left open.

  • Perhaps it might work? You may have to be rooted on Android for your phone to be the tag to then make purchases. But being rooted and banking apps often don’t play nicely together, so you won’t be able to access your banking app on the phone if that’s something you’ll want to do alongside this.

If you want to go the route of just being able to backup and then copy it to a blank tag, I bought some off Amazon. They have cards the size of a credit card and also little circles too. But these seem to be permanent, like you write once to it and that’s it. There’s also a storage limit on them, so in the case of the Amiibo, I couldn’t scan them to the credit card sized ones because they weren’t large enough to store Amiibo data. You can also buy devices that will be the tag and cycle through like the Flipper Zero does but just for this purpose. Most of these seem to be for people like me doing it for Amiibo so no idea if it would work on this.

Which this now makes me remember something slightly unrelated I saw on Instagram…some people have taken the chip off of their cards and then put them in things like one guy cut the chip off and then submerged it into resin and made a ring which he could then scan at the Google Pay registers. Biggest issue I see with this is (besides the amount of time and work) that the card has an expiration date, so will inevitably useless after some time lol. But a neat idea, nonetheless.

  • You can do that as well for some NFC tags on your smartphone. On my iPhone, I can read and write in an app called Ally for Amiibo backups. There are similar apps for the same sort of thing for other NFCs. You can scan them in your phone and then write them to another device.

I have read online that jailbroken and rooted devices have the capability to be the tag as well, so you can use your backup on your smartphone instead of having to write it to a blank tag.

  • One recent example I can give you is XnView. It’s a program that is free for personal use as an alternative to some specific Photoshop suite as well as some other paid photo viewers like ACDSee. But if you’re going to use this for any sort of commercial use, you need to pay for licenses for all computers you use this on. Such was the case for us since we needed it where I work.

Admittedly it’s integrity based for most of these programs. They are hoping that you are going to be honest about your usage and pay when you use it for commercial use. There doesn’t appear to be telemetry that reports back your usage as this is usually just some guy releasing his personal project. In the case of XnView, I feel it was a guy who was fed up with more recent updates to ACDSee and made his own that mirrors the older versions and just works.

We bought the licenses but I never really felt they were necessary to activate. But we had the proof if we were ever audited that we paid for commercial usage.

I pirate some stuff in my personal life, but these little guys who do this are seriously awesome and I try my hardest to follow their rules since it’s so convenient and helpful in my search and their approach is not ever privacy intrusive.

Another example would be WinRAR, if I remember correctly. They expect businesses to pay to use it but the general public of users just using it at home get the free, infinite “trial”.

  • Guy in my 30’s here too. I felt the same but the last 4 relationships I’ve had over the last decade, all of them approached me. Two women at work had an interest in me and reached out to me and another came by a friend and another came from online dating, she messaged me first.

I have spent time going hard on the search and didn’t have as much luck as when I just sat back and did my own thing. I focused on my hobbies and doing what made me happy than trying to please women I was interested in and making them my top priority in hopes they would see me and want to date me.

  • Can’t stress the use of gloves and a mask for safety when using resin. I got some resin on my latex gloves one time, happened to go outside and I could feel the resin baking in the sun within seconds of the sunlight hitting the glove.

I can’t imagine what that would have felt like if I didn’t have gloves on.

I have a painter’s mask with the disposable filters and it is a must have as well. I can’t smell the fumes with it on but can smell the lingering fumes immediately when taking it off.

  • I’ve had my best luck when I didn’t try/wasn’t actively searching.

I hated hearing that when I was single but it seems true.

I think sometimes the smell of desperation comes off even if you don’t feel desperate and it scares people off. Whereas if you’re not looking and happen to meet someone, it’s natural and there is no desperation because you’re doing you.

Not to say you can’t still swipe on Tinder, etc.; just put more effort into doing things you enjoy and the rest comes naturally. Take pictures of yourself doing those things you enjoy to share on your dating profiles which helps in this search too. Since you want something long term, you need some common ground and hobbies/common interests are perfect for that.

If you’re into reading and post about books you’ve read, you’ll meet someone who strikes up a conversation about reading the same book. Sort of like that, is what I’m getting at.

    Good luck!

  • I got my first SLA printer last year and can confirm, do not get this if you don’t have good ventilation or space away from you.

I print exclusively with water washable resins which are less potent in smell and IIRC toxicity too, and it still smells and the smell still gives me a headache if I try to do something quick without my mask. The smell lingers around the printer when printing even hours after putting on the top cover. I’m working on a solution to air it out through a dryer duct but I don’t think that will be the end all either.

Go with an FDM and print PLA until you have a better arrangement at home. Avoid ABS printing because it has similar effects and dangers for your health as resin printing.
