I don’t subscribe to your personal purity tests or agree with the logic on that one. The resources involved can be minimal, and I don’t really believe you have a ton of exposure to software engineering if you think all of the prototype code will need cleaned up or be entirely understood, especially with devices like these. There are significant amounts of binary blobs and drivers filled with post compiled obfuscated closed source code that nobody maintains or understands even in current Nura distributions, it’s a design of ip protections popular hardware manufacturers use and nothing guarantees the quality or maintainability of that code. Just because you don’t like or know how to use a tool does not invalidate it, and there’s no reason for you to apply genuine concerns to a tools entire existence or output.

The reasons stated are not immediate granted fact, nor are they all logical. Again, fork it and move on. Nura can have whatever policy they’d like, but it doesn’t make sense not to use a tool, that it should be obvious by now can accomplish the prototyping work of entire engineering teams. In a good enough fashion to create software for revitalizing what would otherwise be ewaste. To me that doesn’t sit well with their goals, at least as applied to this reality. You can have whatever opinion on it you’d like, I know there’s a cult of anti ai on lemmy and in open source software, and I do sympathize with some of their viewpoints and the legitimate concerns.

What a genuinely antithetical stance to take on a project meant to keep otherwise dying hardware alive, but that’s the beauty of open source. You don’t have to give a damn about upstream, just fork and rebase into your own little niche and move on.

That’s literally how any update on a computer ever will work. Real downsides worth mentioning would be like “you’ll be unbootable, you can’t rollback, it’ll update a bunch of other packages, it might delete user home”. Having to select an old entry in your grub config at boot because the new kernel doesn’t play nice with any number of custom peripherals or packages on your system is not what I would consider a serious downside and you’d have to do it if Kubuntu decided to roll a kernel update anyway. Do you uh, use linux?

Have you tried moving to a newer kernel? It should be working with Nvidia latest and KDE latest (Mine is solid on CachyOS) so it could be a kernel bug for you. No real downside to installing a newer one; but depending on your setup there could be a few regressions that might force you back to stable.

Is it possible you misconfigured your tailnet and instead of using a direct connection to your local subnet router you were using an ethereal port via a DERP relay? You can read into it more on tailscales documentation, but essentially you need to leave UPD inbound port 41641 open to your subnet router inbound from WAN.

Tailscale, headscale, or something along those lines may help optimize the route but as others have said to resolve this is an actual fashion you’d need a cdn which requires significant geo-redundant hardware which comes at a pretty significant cost. That being said I think your friend has a good shot if you implement the former.

Tape drives will be expensive and likely beyond overkill for this. I’d recommend you grab a blue ray DVD writer and use that instead. The discs are generally shelf stable for 25 years and hold about 50-128GB depending on the disc. Duplicates are cheap, storage is relatively easy, and it doesn’t require constant upkeep/power like a hard drive would. Downsides? They just stopped making the discs, so they’ll grow in cost over time. That’s about it that I can think of.

To be fair to bottles, they cité that even their hosting costs are usually barely covered, so I imagine it’s running on a pretty lean/Foss dev budget already.
