I find it amazing how few companies don’t even give people a chance. I’m tech-inclined, but the only thing I have to my name is a Comptia A+ cert. However, I’ve also done a lot of things that are well beyond that skill set in a multitude of ways, and I also learn quite quickly. It’s tough to put ‘Hey, I managed a MYSQL database for a modded Minecraft server and I set everything up myself.’ on a resume. Nobody even bothers to read that because it mentions Minecraft, never mind the amount of actual work it takes to run a public-facing server like that with hundreds of active players logged in at once. It certainly isn’t ’just playing a video game’.

I’m thinking about the sorts of folks that drop out of high school. Better for them to be able to get work experience early on rather than have to leech off their parents for a few years while not being able (or willing) to give anything back.

I’m not saying the situation is ideal by any means, certainly. In an ideal world, every kid would be able to get an awesome education and become amazing contributors to society. We don’t live in that world. We live in a world where people are too poor to afford to drive their kids to school, to afford the lunches they’re being forced to pay for their kids at that school, to afford the supplies they need, etc etc.

If our lawmakers aren’t going to fix larger societal problems, at least these kids can try to make it by, rather than simply being a drain. And yes, I know this law passing is only making things harder to fix in the long run, but at least the kids are allowed to do something that might help ‘em stay off the street or off drugs. Yes, companies are going to exploit them for cheap labor… like they do adults. The issue isn’t just that kids are working, the issue is also that companies are allowed to exploit anyone, regardless of age. That’s a larger issue that will take a lot more effort to fix.

So in the meantime, let the kids at least try if their means prevent a better life otherwise.

You aren’t wrong by any means. It sucks all around, but at least they’re being given the chance to contribute in some small way even if it isn’t ideal. However, I highly doubt any employer they’ll work for will treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve as human beings regardless of their age or circumstances.

Well, if they’re gonna drop out they’ll need some kind of experience to make it in the real world later on. Might as well be work experience, I guess.

I ditched Amazon because I worked for them for almost two years and saw how they treat people. They care about nothing other than making as much money as they can and spending as little as possible to do it. They work people to the bone because it’s cheaper to have them quit and just hire someone else than it is to keep ‘em around and have ‘em eventually ask for a raise.

I think in that case, no. ‘Style’ is one thing, directly using someone’s art in your own work is something else entirely. However, we’re talking about a person here, not a program developed by a company for the express purpose of making as much money as possible in the shortest amount of time. Until AI can truly demonstrate that it is truly thinking and not simply executing commands given, I don’t think the lines are blurred nearly enough to suggest that someone learning to paint and an AI trained on hundreds of thousands of pieces of art for the purpose of making money for the company that built it are remotely the same.

Using copyrighted material for something you aren’t gonna make any money off of? Cool, go hog wild. If you’re gonna use some music or art that you didn’t make in something that will make you money, the folks that made whatever you used should get a cut. Not the whole cut, but a cut.

…then maybe they shouldn’t exist. If you can’t pay the copyright holders what they’re owed for the license to use their materials for commercial use, then you can’t use ‘em that way without repercussions. Ask any YouTuber.

Some are cool with it if you just let them know you’re gonna be uploading a lot, but yeah. Most are gonna put a stop to it eventually.

Right, I’m not disagreeing with you there. Shit, I use a VPN for work as well. I’m not uploading terabytes of data. Downloading, maybe, but I’m not running any servers at home.

All I’m saying is that using that much upload bandwidth, regardless of what’s being uploading, might throw up some red flags at OP’s ISP. They might force OP onto a business plan.

Downloading, yeah. Uploading, no. Most ‘normal’ folks aren’t uploading terabytes of data.

That doesn’t change the fact that there’s suddenly an extra terabyte being uploaded through their pipes.
