That’s kind of the funniest part in fact: these companies are destroying their own viable business segments. Bing was a huge growth driver for Microsoft. Less clicks is bad for them. They make more money on Bing ads than they do on LLMs. Same with Google.

Reddit is getting crushed atm after it sold access to its data to train models. Chat bots make visiting these websites pointless, without replacing that traffic with anything they can meaningfully monetize.

The more popular Gemini is, the less money Google will make. The market has already shown how much people are willing to pay for Ai subscriptions, and it isn’t all that much. None of these companies have found a way to make ads viable in LLMs either. They are beyond self sabotaging themselves at this point. It really is a doom loop.

Running from USB usually means it boots from USB and then is stored on your RAM. If you don’t write to the drive at all, the USB will usually be fine.

I have XigmaNAS (FreeBSD) setup like that. Works fine if the OS is really small.

I think that aligns with the deployment strategy right? They are targeting 27 which is the middle release and not LTS. Get some mileage on it prior to 28 LTS.

My bet is, Canonical as a service provider has a customer that is willing to pay for access to more secure rust utils. Or they want to save resources fixing CVEs.

There’s also the spectre of future security regulations possibly demanding these changes one day too.

If you wanted something out of copyleft, you would have an easier time just building on top of FreeBSD. It does like ~80% of what Ubuntu does already.

I don’t feel too hot about them using MIT either, but I fail to see why they would implement this just to get rid of a GPL component. Seems expensive for nothing.

Rust eliminates memory safety vulnerabilities. It accounts for a large percentage of bugs that need patching in live environments, like servers.

I believe Ubuntu wants to grow in iot or embedded devices so reducing patching needs gives them a competitive edge there.

Cities Skylines is at best a remake of Sim City 4. Its all copied, they only added some 3d tech stuff and made an annoying graveyard mechanic that gets old right away.

The trams are pretty cool though.

Listen I do the same and think its a worthwhile effort. I just have been hanging out in these virtual spaces long enough and I know what people run.

Honestly, it’s a tough case to defend. Sure game servers are fine and a bullshit claim by lobbyists, but who isn’t using their home server to stream pirated media?

I think we should normalize buying media again. I’ve been getting more and more albums off Bandcamp and buying DVDs and Blurays. It would be nice to see digital releases become decently abundant for TV and Film. I sometimes rent hard to find movies off Youtube. Always comes in clutch. Who else rents you a movie anymore?

The real thing even has benefits. I enjoy having the ease of getting both english and french dubs to my favorite shows. Means I can watch them with my family.

Rent or finance, just like a car.
