LLMs are fundamentally a dead end though. If we ever create AGI, it will be a qualitatively different thing from an LLM.

It’s named as attack ad bait. “So-and-so voted against the Kids Online Safety Act” sounds bad to the uninformed voter, and there are a lot of uninformed voters.

You’d be right in this case too. It’s extremely sketchy, it’s pretty much absolute censorship power with only an informal promise that it won’t be used for anything nefarious (but a refusal to actually codify anything preventing that). “Harmful content” is left very conveniently vague.

The claim is “Earth isn’t a planet”, sometimes with the addition of “space isn’t real”.

“Why” implies they act according to some form of logic. The thing is, they’re racists, and racists tend to be fucking stupid.

“Hallucination” is an anthropomorphized term for what’s happening. The actual cause is much simpler, there’s no semantic distinction between true and false statements. Both are equally plausible as far as a language model is concerned, as long as it’s semantically structured like an answer to the question being asked.

Remember when every platform renamed PMs to DMs and everyone who pointed out that they’re trying to remove the expectation of privacy was “paranoid”?

It’s the fact that it could just be a checkbox in search settings, but they make it as hidden as humanly possible, not only is it in the registry, but it’s not an existing flag you can change, it’s a flag you have to know the exact name of to add. It only takes a minute if you’re the type of person to be here commenting on a Linux meme on Lemmy, but to the average user, the option almost doesn’t exist.

That’s a myth. A very commonly repeated myth, but a myth nonetheless.

Somewhat pedantically speaking, the belief that an evil god exists (exclusively or otherwise) is dystheism. Misotheism is the hatred of a god or gods. Dystheism implies misotheism, but they’re not exactly the same.

Just because things were worse in the past doesn’t mean they can’t be better in the future.

This is why LLMs have no future. No matter how much the technology improves, they can never have training data past 2021, which becomes more and more of a problem as time goes on.

4G LTE was the point of no return. It was supposed to mean “it’s not 4G yet but we have an upgrade plan to get there”, but when they finally did, marketing found out that to the average person, going from 4G LTE to 4G sounded like a downgrade, so they rebranded it to 5G.

Now that’s not entirely fair. Some are both.

It’s not quite a historical event, more of a bit of trivia, but it seems to be common knowledge that it’s possible to cheat at Duck Hunt by pointing the light gun at a light bulb, making it register a hit every time, often repeated as a sort of “look how far we’ve come, those silly game devs in the 80s missing such an obvious exploit.”

Except it doesn’t work. The light gun checks for a frame of darkness followed by a frame of light. If it picks up light when it’s not supposed to, it counts it as a miss because it knows what you’re pointing at isn’t the screen at all. But people in all corners of the internet are absolutely convinced this trick was a thing for some reason.
