…are they going to apply this rule to Nintendo or Sony…
They absolutely should. Closed ecosystems should be illegal. They are literally an intentional form of unethical, predatory trust.

Oh, did GM just step in it this time. Being stupid and removing important features is one thing, but straight-up defamation like this is another.
Google and Apple’s lawyers must be salivating a river right now.
Debian is my go-to. So long as you’re already comfortable with Linux, you can get gaming working with a tiny bit of elbow grease… and unlike some other distros, Debian is rock-solid.
Taco Bell is about as Mexican as Mac & Cheese. When I talk about Mexican food, I am talking about Mexican food.
Maybe it’s that I don’t watch much comedy, but I’ve literally never seen anything dump on Indian. There is nothing more delicious than Indian. Nothing. Not even Mexican food. I do not say that lightly.
The Avocado Tartine (+ Poached Egg) from Tartine Bakery here in California.
I’m a carnivore, through-and-through… but that $20 piece of avocado toast is orgasmic.
Second place: Tacos de Pastor de Trompo from this little stand in Ensenada (Baja, Mexico). I’m not sure if it’s even still there, but those tacos were ecstasy.
No, it’s Californian food… which is vaguely inspired by Mexican food.
First off, wealth and power are the same thing and must be dealt with at the same time. So for a start…
Aggressive progressive taxation, up to 100% (billionaires - even 9-figure multimillionaires- must never be allowed to exist).
Abolish stock markets.
All companies must be employee-owned. Employees share equitable ownership of the companies they work within. Profits are shared only among employees.
Criminalize political spending, lobbying (aka bribery), etc. Candidates all draw from a public fund and platforms and that is all they may use.
Aggressive market regulation to protect competition and prevent consolidation. Our failure to protect the market from excess consolidation and integration is the primary reason we’ve reached the late-stage capitalism hellscape we currently exist within.
Again, this is a start… the tip of the iceberg.
There is a massive amount of leftist documentation on economics. We’re not all communists, but we recognize that any system devoid of regulation/oversight/accountability will always quickly travel rightward and become authoritarian. So the question is what systems and policies can be put in place to ensure not only equity for all, but equity that remains stable indefinitely (or as close as is possible).
I really like Orion, which is based on WebKit… but it’s Mac only. 😢
Remember, Firefox is great and has no dependency on upstream Google code.
Use Firefox.
I really, really like Gitlab… but this is a MAJOR problem and spectacularly short-sighted.
Makes sense, since Microsoft explicitly won’t allow a massive number of computers to install Windows 11.
You realise the AI is being trained on pictures of real children, right?
Disingenuous and misleading statement. No readily available AI is trained on CP.
So it’s wrong for it to be based on one child, but according to you the AI “art” (as you keep calling it) is okay as long as there are thousands of victims instead?
Disingenuous and misleading statement. I’m guessing you don’t understand how AI works. As for AI output, a randomly generated nonexistent person is nonexistent. Simple as that.
Sidenote: I disapprove of nonconsensual Photoshop and AI illustrations of real people, except for fair use cases such as satire. AI is just another illustrative tool, and the choice of tool is beside the point.
So you’re cool with images of 6 year olds being penetrated by a 40 year old as long as “tHe Ai DrEw iT sO nObOdY gOt HuRt”?
No, I am not. And that is still utterly unimportant. It doesn’t matter how I feel about someone’s fictitious illustrations, sculptures, writings, or anything else created by a person or AI that is wholly fictitious.
That’s literally the whole point I am making: It doesn’t matter how I feel about it, it doesn’t matter how YOU feel about it. It’s not real. Neither you nor I nor anyone else has the right to judge someone else’s art.
it wouldn’t be crazy for the 8.8 million 23andMe customers who once absently checked a box saying yeah, sure, use my data for whatever, to feel like they’ve been bait-and-switched now that their genes are laying the groundwork for potential cancer cures.
Yes, it would be crazy. And stupid. As a 23andMe customer this is EXACTLY the kind of thing I expected them to do with the information.
Careful, any time I point this out, the fascists come out of the woodwork to call me a pedo.
Criminalizing the creation, possession, or viewing of entirely artificial artwork is beyond unethical; it’s extraordinarily evil. I don’t care if you find someone’s artwork gross, troubling, distasteful, immoral, etc… that’s art. Victimizing real people is not “art” or “speech” or “expression”… so as long as that isn’t happening there is no ethical grounds whatsoever for restricting a persons exercise of expression, especially in private.
Social consequences for creating, sharing, viewing certain artwork is one thing… but the government or law punishing someone for it is a different thing entirely.
That said, this specific case is different in that the doctor DID in fact victimize real children by using secret photos and recordings of them to create the images. That crosses way across the line that I laid out above. Additionally, he possessed actual CSAM (which he may have made himself), and so is absolutely guilty of sexually victimizing real children. That guy deserves everything he gets in prison.
Ever since Reddit killed itself, the only places I really lurk are Kbin (and therefore Lemmy by proxy) and Discord. That’s pretty much it.
Epic is right about this… but these are American companies, and America loves monopolies. No matter how obvious, justified, or cut-and-dry the case against these two companies is, this didn’t work against Apple and it won’t work against Google.
Kagi is awesome. I strongly recommend giving them a try.
As a Firefox user I prefer Kagi. Google is the antithesis of everything Firefox is supposed to stand for. That said, Yahoo has always been horrible and, out of the options that ARE available, Yahoo was easily the absolute worst.
Not if I’m not using any Google products. There are now excellent (even superior) alternatives to everything Google offers save YouTube.
