Is yours one? I saw other people suggest Lemmy.zip, mander I think is one, and lemdr.oid or something like that.
The problem is that they tend to be smaller, which means harder to find.

This suuuucks. We need another big, general instance that doesn’t defed everyone. But I get it, being an admin sounds like a lot of work or I would do it lol. Plus I don’t have place for a server around here. Or do most admins just buy space from the cloud?
Reminds me of that great joke -
“I have to admit, I’m always so impressed by Soviet propaganda. You really know how to get people worked up,” the CIA agent says.
“Thank you,” the KGB says. “We do our best but truly, it’s nothing compared to American propaganda. Your people believe everything your state media tells them.”
The CIA agent drops his drink in shock and disgust. “Thank you friend, but you must be confused… There’s no propaganda in America.”
Of course it’s not state media directly in the states, but the same billionaires who own the state own the media, so it turns out all to be the same thing in the end.
Holy shit actual media criticism and analysis on North Korea. Never thought I’d see this day.
The little clip with the meta-commentary on news stories commenting about them was hilarious yet insightful, so I definitely have to watch the full documentary they’re referencing (EDIT: especially if it’s just the 20 minute video you linked. That’s the full video? I thought I heard the word documentary so thought it would be longer).
Ah see, there’s the problem. I don’t think it’s like Newton’s Theory of Gravitation. The rate of profit to fall isn’t some ironclad law that’s applicable in all cases 100% of the time. Cowbee already conceded various ways it could not be true (lack of competition such as through monopoly, exploitation of workers, globalization and imperialism, cartels, trusts, etc).
It seems to describe the natural tendency of a system-wide phenomenon (assuming increasing automation and existing competition in capitalism but nothing really else), so you’d have to consider a macro view of the entire system over a long period of time for it to work. It’s like how you can’t say one section of the world has been getting colder or staying the same for a couple years and thus climate change has been debunked, as you not only need to look at the whole planet but then the next couple decades as well.
So the next company has a brief increase in rate of profit, but then taking a more extended look at the system, everyone will probably switch suppliers to the cheaper wood and someone is going to lower their prices, forcing everyone else to (barring one of the scenarios above).
You can probably counter climate change temporarily, too. For example, dumping increasingly larger ice cubes in the ocean every year.
I think that’s Richard Wolff’s whole thing. I think he’s communist? At least socialist.
Except how are you going to change society without some form of power, which forces you to use the state? I wouldn’t call it utopian what they were describing, while anarchism to me sounds more utopian. Without the power to defend yourselves, the power of capitalists, current, former, or foreign will destroy you.
I consider myself a socialist, but shit, I live in capitalism too and have bills to pay lol.
So for a concrete example, if you end up in the worker coop for a finance company and own a slice of that, or work in Microsoft and are an employee-owner of that, you’d end up a lot better than if you worked in the fast food restaurant you work in. Is that kind of what you’re saying?
It sounds like it’s similar to saying climate change isn’t real because the weather was colder one day, when in actuality the theory of global warming is describing an ongoing process and tendency of the temperature to increase in the overall system overall long period of time, it’s not a day to day weather phenomenon you can describe with a singular slice of time.
Thanks! I would super appreciate that. I found that version, too, and got super hopeful when I did. Imagine my surprise when I played it and it turned out to be Chinese lol.
It should be in the Channel 4 streaming service you’d think, but it isn’t for some reason. It’s actually a great example of the role piracy has to play in archiving media and data.
There’s a channel 4 documentary that sounded interesting from just a couple years ago, like 2022 or something like that, that I can’t seem to find where Prue from The Great British Bake-Off is tracking down the family of her adopted child (I watch a lot of GBBO, hence why it sounded interesting). It’s so recent and Prue is so famous in the UK, I am surprised how difficult it has been to track down.
Didn’t know they changed owners. That’s unfortunate.
Thanks!!!
Gotcha. Good to know. So it’s like TPB would change domains or hosts every couple months in the old days? Lol
Just wanted to give an update that I started learning Linux. It’s been a pain in the ass to look up every basic thing I could do in Windows without thinking, but I’m sure I’ll get it down with enough use and googling for every error. Only been using it a couple days so far, but already starting to prefer the console over the UI for some things, thanks to the ability to quickly repeat old commands with the up and down arrow keys. It’s kind of exciting, like I’m starting the first steps to join the Linux club I see so much on Lemmy.
Do you need a seedbox to maintain your ratio? I’ve thought about looking into them but don’t want to pay some monthly fee to get a couple hard to find things, when I could just torrent from my plex box when I need to.
Oh nice! Thanks!
