I suspect it still draws battery power, but extremely small amounts. Few mah left in the battery could power a BLE beacon for weeks. There would be some limit to this as draining the lithium battery too deeply will damage it.

My local grocery store does it with their smartphone app. I shop this way almost every time. Bag as I go, then stop at a special self checkout at the end to pay.
I have a Samsung “smart” TV. I keep it disconnected from the Internet entirely. If it connects it’s horribly slow to use, not to mention the data collection, etc… switching inputs would take 30 seconds. Infuriating.

I use this to reduce fan noise on my amd laptop with a discrete rx560m when playing games. I had to add a kernel boot parameter to get it working

Yeah I bought a $300 amd Chromebook and run Linux on it. Had to flash a new efi firmware to make it fully usable though. Worst part of it is the soldered 8gb of RAM but it works for my usage.
