Can confirm. Had the OG XBOX (Still somewhere in a Box). I installed a modchip and Linux. That beast could practically run anything like a PC. I upgraded the HDD to about 200GB back then. You could just throw in a game and make a backup on your HDD. The Controllers were basically USB Controllers with a different connector. Good times. IMHO the OG XBOX was the pinnacle of moddable consoles. Everything started to decline when the consoles began to be online 24/7 and games started to be unplayable out of the box without TBs of updates… Oh, also you actually owned your disc back then.
While everybody hops on the newest trends I just try to understand the technology I am working with right now in Projects. Keeps me from wasting time with buzzwords and trends that are going to be obsolete in a couple of years.
If there is nothing new going on I usually pick a topic that I am interested in, get a good old book and read it. Usually this is knowledge not too related to my everyday work. This helps to have broad technical knowledge. Helps me heavily in my projects and everyday life.
But I have to admit I don’t apply for jobs 😉
A couple of weeks ago I tried Outlook 365 when Windows Mail made me mad for the 1000th time because it has issues to actually send the E-Mails from one of my accounts…
Anyway, outlook started and of course just added my Microsoft Account ignoring all other accounts that could’ve been imported from Windows mail. There was a new mail so I clicked it. Although Firefox is my default browser, edge opened and there was a website. It took me multiple seconds to realize that Microsoft just baited me to click an ad and earn a couple of cents.
I got so angry that I installed thunderbird. If I compare it with older releases from a couple of years ago it did get a whole lot better. I’m very happy.
Windows gave me so many reasons in the last months that I also ditched it completely. Running Linux Mint now and just like thunderbird it is so much more refined if I compare it with the past…
Paying money for crappy subscription based software like office (need it for work) and still getting ads was definitely the no 1 reason to switch.
If you put it on the top, remove all app icons and add a second bar on the bottom that shows the apps and hides when you open a window in full screen mode, it even gets a macOS feeling out of the box without any addons.
I tried KDE, Gnome, xfce and experimented with tiling window managers. At the end of the day I’m always getting back to cinnamon. It just works for me and I love it 😍
Maybe it’s me but calling it Linux Subsystem for Windows (LSW) would‘ve been more accurate in my opinion.
This reminds me of code I’ve written in the past and reviewed years later: At first glance it looks like it is wrong. Especially if magic numbers are involved. Then I start to think about it (hopefully with some hints in the comments 😉) and remember soon that I spent a lot of time thinking about this specific line back then and wrote it fully intentional to limit the effect of variables in my calculations 😁

Mein lieber Mann war das knapp. Es ist und bleibt bescheuert sich vor Tonnen von Eisen zu setzen und der Person am Steuer zu vertrauen dass sie nicht weiterfährt. Ich bin als Fußgänger schon fast paranoid und versuche mich immer so bewegen dass es praktisch unmöglich ist mich anzufahren. Und diese Personen heizen seit Monaten eine Situation auf, bei der es abzusehen ist, dass es früher oder später Tote geben wird, und setzen sich sogar vor LKWs. Ich bin wirklich froh, dass es hier wahrscheinlich nur ein paar Schrammen sind. Und vor allen Dingen bin ich froh, dass der Fahrer nicht im Affekt jemanden getötet hat, was er im Nachhinein bitter bereut hätte. Ich heiße die Reaktion nicht gut aber kann den Frust schon nachvollziehen, wenn du (mit einem Job der auf den Straßenverkehr angewiesen ist) versuchst finanziell über die Runden zu kommen und da plötzlich einer unnütz auf der Straße sitzt.
Umweltschutz in allen ehren aber ich sehe bei den ganzen Aktionen null Wirkung. Man geht nur Privatleuten auf die Nerven, die ihrer Arbeit nachgehen. Nicht mehr, nicht weniger.
Ich habe 4xWD Red mit 4TB verbaut (noch die alten CMR Varianten). Die ältesten zwei haben jetzt ~74000 Betriebsstunden auf der Uhr und laufen immer noch Problemlos. Ich hatte noch 4x4TB HGST Platten, von denen zwei mittlerweile gestorben sind (ich glaube beide unter 40000h. Diese wurden durch 2x16TB Seagates (ich glaube Ironwolf) ersetzt von denen ich sowieso 4 in einer RS verwende um Teilegleichheit zu haben. Von denen habe ich insgesamt 6 seit 2 Jahren im Einsatz und bin bisher zufrieden.
Je nachdem wie viele Platten du nutzen möchtest wären vllt auch SSDs interessant. Die Preise sind mittlerweile (für meinen Geschmack) genug gefallen, dass ich testweise die nächste defekte Platte durch eine SSD ersetzen würde um Erfahrungen zu sammeln. Ich habe 2x500GB Samsung Evos als Cache am laufen und in ca. zwei Jahren wurden ca 7% Reserven verbraucht. Der Energieverbrauch von Festplatten ist nicht zu unterschätzen, meine voll bestückte 1817+ zieht ca. 80W und die RS1221+ mit 4x16TB ca 60W.
Zusätzlich habe ich als Backup Server noch 3 0815 WD Platten und eine alte HGST am laufen. Die WDs sind SMR und haben eine katastrophale Performance. Da ich damit nur Nachts Backups ziehe tut das nicht weh aber konventionelle Platten sind deutlich performanter. SMR würde ich niemals produktiv nutzen.
Ich habe das vor kurzem im Bekanntenkreis miterlebt: Die krebskranke Person hat sich ein Bett nach Hause bringen lassen und hat sich zum Sterben hingelegt. Sie musste tagelang bewusst nix trinken um zu verdursten und die Verwandschaft hatte noch die ehrenvolle Aufgabe regelmäßig zu schauen, ob sie zufällig gestorben ist. Das war für alle Beteiligten anstrengend und ein absolut unnötiges Leid. Sie hatte schmerzen, war klar im Kopf und wollte nicht mehr. Wieso kann man das nicht respektieren? Wieso muss man auf solche nicht humane Varianten zurückgreifen, wenn es auch ohne Leid gehen könnte? Mindestens mal in solchen Fällen ohne Hoffnung auf Besserung sollte es legal möglich sein.
