It’s hard to choose, but I would say the Haber-Bosch process for ammonia production. It’s a miracle of chemistry that almost single-handedly vaporized the population doomers. As much as half of the nitrogen in your body comes from Haber-process-derived synthetic fertilizer!

I mean… you’re surrounded by trillions of perfect nanotech devices. They’re called MOSFETs, and they make literally the entire modern world go round.

I suspect I get mild SAD in the winters. Not enough to feel truly depressed, just more of a constant low-level “damn, I wanna nap right now.”

It’s probably different from your case, but what helped me was a sunlight lamp (light therapy) and a grab bag of supplements - standard multivitamins as well as magnesium pills and vitamin D fortified milk.

Chevy Suburban. I volunteered to drive for a university course field trip and it’s what I got stuck with.

• Unresponsive fatass brick of a vehicle. I mean, come on, a minivan has more cargo space and the same passenger capacity without three light aircraft worth of inertia.
• Dashboard sucked. It took me a solid three minutes to find the button shifts. (I know these can be done well - Honda does them right - but the PRNDL was fucking laid out in a thin row at the side of the dashboard. Huh?)
• Overtaking damn near anything would redline the (very new, less than 10k miles) engine.

I understand the sentiment, but… HTML and some light CSS is just as fast and much more accessible. It just strikes me as something that defines itself in opposition to “thing everyone uses” for no good reason.

Without HVAC (which I’m assuming is the case) your options are limited. I would look into fans and evaporative coolers.

There are also freestanding compression-based units that have you run tubes out the window, but avoid single tube models!

I’ll believe it when I see it. There’s a long, long way to go between current quantum tech and something that can crack modern 4096-bit RSA.

And honestly, it’ll probably come so slowly that we’ll have all switched to better algorithms by the time RSA cracking becomes feasible. (Yeah, I know about store now decrypt later, but that won’t really effect the average person if it takes decades to come to fruition.)

Firefox and its derivatives. They’re the last free bastion preventing a Chromium monopoly on the browser market, which is hugely important - especially these days with Google’s push for Mv3.

I was only ever really into Reddit, which Lemmy has handily replaced.

• I technically have an Instagram, but I scrubbed it and removed the app to stop me from doomscrolling and giving Meta ad revenue.
• Microblogging like Twitter or Tumblr never really appealed to me.
• I was born after 2000, so Facebook doesn’t exist in my world.

I do use Discord, but mainly because all my friends and family are on there. I would love if a federated alternative like Matrix became the standard. Hopefully the EU’s Digital Markets Act will help - if I understand it correctly, Discord and other platforms will be forced to allow seamless bridges (which currently will get you banned) under interoperability requirements.

• Earbuds (Galaxy Buds, specifically) when I’m out and about.
• At home, I have a pair of wireless headphones (Bose) that lives next to my desktop rig.
• I also have some remarkably good Amazon Basics speakers (from 2014! The only thing that survives from my first machine!) that I use every now and then.

Not a Nix user, but IIRC nixpkgs is actually bigger than the AUR by a long shot.

This is unhelpful, but… I just don’t look at the news. If something actually important happens, I’ll hear about it indirectly and go look it up if I care, but I’ve found that not being tapped into the news (and especially political news) all day every day does wonders for my mental health.

LLMs are little more than overclocked autocompletes. There’s no actual thinking going on, and they will happily hallucinate outright wrong or dangerous responses to innocuous questions.

I’ve had friends find this out the hard way when they asked ChatGPT to write them C for a class, only to get their faces eaten by UB.

OpenAI’s models are trained by scraping anything that moves. Anything overtly offensive or toxic is manually filtered out by cheap foreign labor… but you know what that won’t catch?

I don’t have any technical answers for you, but I’m on GNOME Wayland and I’ve never had any issues like that.

GNOME. However, I use ArcMenu and Dash to Panel to get a KDE/Windows style taskbar UX.

Why do I use GNOME then, you might ask? Well, I really like the simplicity and aesthetic of GTK/Adwaita. KDE is too noisy - for example, the built in text editor (Kate) can double as an IDE, when all I’m really looking for is a box I can type in.

Personally, I don’t mind this sort of telemetry so long as they’re open about it - which looks to be the plan, at least for the moment.

IMO the FOSS/Linux space has an odd relationship with telemetry that I think should change. I’d like to point out the gnome-info-collect debacle:

• GNOME users: “GNOME devs don’t understand what we want!”
• GNOME devs: “Hey, we want to get some data on how people use GNOME. If you’d like to help, install and run this one-off tool. Source code is here, and we collect XYZ metrics (all anonymized, of course.)”
• (Some) GNOME users: screeching incoherently about data harvesting and telemetry

Fedora Silverblue. The ultimate bulletproof no-babysitting Linux experience!

Granted, I do fit into a fairly specific niche of users who don’t have any hard attachment to Windows or macOS. I’m a programmer (Linux is great for dev work, ever wonder why WSL exists?) and all the games I play are either native or work great under Proton.

Yeah, there really isn’t any reason to go with one processor brand over the other. Since drivers and such aren’t a concern (like with GPUs) most people just pick whichever one has the most price-effective offering in the spec range they’re looking for.

Sheesh, I thought it looked nice, but I think I’ll just stick to gnome-terminal.
