  • The whole point of the conversation is that the other platforms arent doing any work for the consumer.

    To this day, epic doesnt even launch on linux officially, and requires a 3rd party launcher to even play its games. Epics first party games are on the list of games that dont work on linux.

    There's clearly one company who puts more effort onto the consumer front than the other. Epic doesnt even need to make a custom OS like valve does, it just needs to get their own launcher working, and their own games working, which they dont and refuse to.

    To say that Epic is doing better for the consumer is disingenuous (however it does better for the developer though)



  • Its less about immedoate profit and more about pumping up gamepass numbers under one umbrella for investors to see a large number increase. Its part of the reason why Xbox Live Gold has been rebranded into Gamepass Core. Microsoft supposedly is under their sub projection (despite having about 40M subs) and trying to pump the numbers as much as possible.

    Overwatch makes no sense given its a feee game. Unless your implying gamepass pays for the battlepass, as the game moving to gamepass would be a detriment on console as it does not require gamepass core to play (as its free)








  • Epics is much lower because theyre trying to entice devs, but they are the anomally in the sea of pricing.

    Epics trying to win market by enticing devs instead of working on features for the consumer, thats their market plan. Epic wasnt the only platform to have lower than 30% cut. Discord sold games at 10% cut, itchio is similar. Devs essentially debate of the baked in features of the platform and its audience is worth the 30% cut(the existing community, game review system, steams controller api, steam workshop, steamvr). Even just the client. ESPECIALLY to Linux users, on a consumer POV, ask yourself about ease getting to use the native client. Valve offers steam natively, and does a lot of work making the consumer end (and developer end too) easier on linux. EGS for example doesnt even run natively on linux, and requires a 3rd party launcher to run. People tend to take for granted all the things Valve has done for both the consumer and Developer.

    Discord massively failed to get users, and devs saw little market in it. Epic takes advatage of their position using unreal engine, and offers some devs money upfront for exclusivity, something certain audiences on PC absolutely hate.

    Users use steam because it simply offers them the best user experience. There are a ton of people who just buys their games directly from valve and not a 3rd party site. To a consumer, money’s not necessarily the problem on their end, and they dont see the 30% hit that developers take. Something good for the developer is not necessarily good for the consumer and vice versa, and many people make that mistake and conflate that to be the same thing when it isnt.






  • AMD supports ML, its just a lot of smaller projects are made with CUDA backends, and dont have developers there to switch from CUDA to OpenCL or similar.

    Some of the major ML libraries that used to built around CUDA like Tensorflow has already made non CUDA branches, but thats only because tensorflow is open source, ubiquitous in the scene and litterally has google behind it.

    ML for more niche uses basically is in the chicken and egg situation. People wont use other gpus for ML because theres no dev working on non CUDA backends. No ones working on non CUDA backends because the devs end up buying Nvidia, which is basically what Nvidia wants.

    There are a bunch of followers but a lack in of leaders to move the direction in a more open compute environment.





  • I think one major thing helping the Gamecube/Xbox/PS2 generation is not only the device, but the television, as they still were primarily used on 480i devices.

    The 360/PS3 although not immediately at the start, were basically on 720p screens, and albeit outside of the switches handheld screen, the resolution is still “usuable” in todays standards and many games on the Xbox One and PS4 was still running at said resolution. People are still using LCD tech which makes it feel weird to call it retro for some.
