I love Firefox and it’s my main browser on laptop and mobile.

But as a KDE user, seriously, fuck it. It’s a mess.

My 16GB XPS running Linux almost fills up entirely when running several docker containers, IDEA, Firefox, Teams, Postman and a few other, smaller apps, but it fits still, and I can work with it (tho I can’t wait to get my 32GB framework laptop)

Now gimme a 8GB MBP and I’ll show you that I wouldn’t get shit done on that configuration. And at 1600 it’s just crazy.

I don’t wanna repeat myself, but: 7840u for the next few years, then I hope RISC V will be mature enough to kick some ass (and that framework releases a board for it).

That’s all I dream of.

2600 is dirt cheap even by Euro standards, trust me.

Here in Italy a single room split would cost you around 1k to 2.5-3k depending on the brand.

A whole house system you're probably looking at 10k and then some.

My hopes for RISC V are higher than I like to admit.

My collection there is quite static and I think I’m a good candidate to go MP3/AAC/whatever 🏴‍☠️ plus Spotify free just to keep up to date with newly released singles/albums from time to time.

P.S. also what comes after would be great, i.e. how I can batch transfer all those files from my home server running lidarr to my Android phone/PC and keep them in sync after the initial transfer. Plus also a nice feature rich Android app, either free (no ads) or even better open source with an accessible price.

Let’s just appreciate the fact that basically no other browser has this.

With chrome/ium you can’t even block ads.

Invest in a solid charger (30-40€ will do). You’ll keep it for years, it’ll charge an odd number of batteries as well (unlike some cheap ones that only charge in pairs) and it charges just the right amount, then stops. Some even have battery test/discharge function, and charge more than just AA/AAA.

Then invest in a bunch of rechargeables, possibly Eneloops or something good from Amazon.

Now profit for years to come. The planet will thank you as well.

I have preordered a framework laptop which will run Linux until it fucking blows up or falls apart.

Enough with being screwed over by well known brands whose interest is just selling you more and more stuff.

I have put my dad on Kubuntu. Don’t like anything *buntu, personally, but I have to admit it’s quite stable and with sane defaults. He hasn’t complained ever since and support calls dropped considerably. He spends most of the time in Firefox anyways, where I’ve added ublock.

The problem with Windows was, he’d occasionally browse the web with Edge by mistake (or because MS forces it down your throat), and as soon as an 80+ y.o. browses the web without ad blocking, getting a virus is just a matter of time.

All this is to say that I agree with the fact that preinstalled is key. I wish that more effort was focused on fewer distros and I feel that so much talent and energies are being lost in marginal projects.

But many people do this for passion and it’s of course their choice to decide where to contribute, or whether to spin up a brand new distro entirely, can’t judge them for that. I’m just observing that those energies could be better used to smoothen some rough edges on more popular distros to make them even more appealing to OEMs and convince them to ship those on their hardware.
