Dunno, I think I prefer patents. Unlike copyright, patents usually last a flat twenty years. Copyright expires either after 95 years or 70 years after the death of the author, which is ludicrous. Both are constantly abused, but at least patents expire in a reasonable amount of time.

So… why are people upset about this? I’d say it’s about damn time. Having two settings apps is pretty ridiculous and it’s honestly crazy it’s taken them this long to ditch the control panel. I still remember people making fun of Microsoft’s inability to drop control panel in the Windows 10 era. Is there anything special about the control panel or uniquely terrible about the settings app that would warrant this kind of negative reaction? Is it because of the settings that aren’t available in settings? If they’re preparing to drop control panel that probably means they’re going to add whatever settings are still stranded on it to the new settings app, unless there’s evidence that they won’t do that.
OS is also identified by user agent, so it’s no less vulnerable to fake agents. In any case, I’d wager the vast majority of users even on Linux use unaltered agents, though this isn’t something that can be backed up one way or another because there are no numbers for fake agents.

This entire thing is just idealism vs pragmatism for the trillionth time. The idealists are mad because they think all ads are bad and we shouldn’t try to work with advertisers in any capacity. They do not believe reducing the harmfulness of ads is a valid approach, because that would be an acknowledgement of ads. Common talking points there are about how this is technically working with advertisers and how the internet shouldn’t have ads in the first place.
The pragmatics also think ads are bad, but believe that an Internet without ads is very unlikely to happen, so they believe attempting to reduce the harmfulness of ads is a valid approach. Common talking points there are about how this isn’t giving advertisers anything they don’t already have and about how this doesn’t matter if you’re using an adblocker.
Like all other debates of this type, this probably isn’t ever going to be resolved to anyone’s satisfaction and we’ve really just been seeing the same talking points over and over again since the beginning. So I hope y’all have fun duking it out, I don’t think I’m gonna bother looking at these pointless PPA threads anymore.

Right, I’m well aware that that article is the reason why a bunch of people have been making the unsubstantiated claim that Nvidia has hired people to work on Nouveau.
Nvidia hired the former lead Nouveau maintainer and he contributed a bunch of patches a couple of months ago after they hired him. That was his first contribution since stepping down and I’m fairly certain it was his last because there’s no way Phoronix would miss the opportunity to milk this some more if they could. He had said when stepping down that he was open to contributing every once in a while, so this wasn’t very surprising either way. To be clear, it is not evidence that he or anyone else was hired by Nvidia to work on Nouveau. Otherwise, I’d like to ask what he’s been doing since, because that was over three months ago.
Last I checked, there is no evidence Nvidia has hired anyone to work on Nouveau.

Though the United States was indeed the first English-speaking country to switch to short scale, pretty much all English-speaking countries have used short scale almost exclusively for a long time, including the United Kingdom. I’m pretty sure the video is just badly misnamed. PackageKit is an abstraction layer for interacting with native packages in a cross-distro manner. It’s used by both Discover and Software Center. It is developed by Red Hat, but not as a part of GNOME.

FDO stands for FreeDesktop.Org, the committee responsible for various desktop Linux standards including icon themes. So FDO icons just refers to your system icon theme, which LibreOffice doesn’t use.
What operating system do you use? On Linux I use Amarok which is great, but afaik there’s no up-to-date versions of it for other operating systems. It should have everything you want dunno about some of these tho like the semicolon stuff. Strawberry is a similar player that works on other operating systems.
