Ok. Probably echo link then. In short - the repeater uses the internet as another transport. Other repeaters can link up, or you can even use their application to activate repeaters right from your computer.
You can also do similar things with other digital modes (DMR etc) but they require special radios that speak that standard.
What band mode and frequency?
Parks On The Air.
Essentially a spotting/sked network for people operating out of state parks. You can “hunt” stations from home or you can “activate” a park by visiting one with your equipment, setting up and making 10 (IIRC) contacts. It’s a nice way to get out and explore some local parks!
There’s also SOTA - summits on the air, which is similar but operates from the tops of mountains.
What band are you looking to operate on? I’d say most of us got our start on repeaters so I’d say that’s the place for a simple beginner voice transmission. If you haven’t seen it yet you can use this site to help find ones near you:

Otherwise there are 2m and 70cm calling frequencies, I believe 146.52 and 446.00, but repeaters would be more populated.

When you copy /home make sure you get the “hidden” files. They start with a “.” and some programs ignore them by default. That’s also where most configuration files are.

There’s nothing really bad with PiHole but I moved from it to AdGuard, both on proxmox. The UI brought me in, makes management a bit easier. It also supports DoH right out of the box.

As far as self hosted I’ve heard a lot about matrix but haven’t tried it. Maybe I’ll give it a shot this weekend.
There’s also telegram, slack, etc if you want something else commercial.
I tried it a few months ago and bought it before the trial was over. Took some time to build trust but it’s still on par with google if not better.

You alluded to this already but ESP32 et al is really awesome but they (and arduino) are microcontrollers, not mini pcs like a raspi which have very different purposes.
You CAN run a webserver on a microcontroller but you’re essentially writing a program to do so. On a raspi you’re installing a full OS and then installing apps (nginx, Apache, jellyfin etc).
Conversely raspi has GPIO which can be used to easily interface with electronics just like the ESP32 but now you’re stuck maintaining a whole os to make your LED blink.
The documentation is a little lacking. What exactly is the range of each decide? I see the record of 100+ miles but can I easily connect people within a few miles?
What exactly does this do? Is it just a messaging app?
