As a nixos user I guess so. It is like -5 here though so today it’s more heated blanket.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Linkwarden (v2.11.0) - open-source collaborative bookmark manager to collect, organize, and preserve webpages, articles, and documents (tons of new features!) 🚀English
1·7 months agoSQLite doesn’t need a networked setup at all. What the poster above is asking is an option for linkwarden to just use embedded SQLite as its db engine. For apps I build I just embed SQLite into the binary, no db network needed, the binary just sets up a db file at startup in say ~/.config/app/db.file and off to the races. If you don’t need to access it from multiple contexts SQLite is hard to beat.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•"When does <insert package name> get update ?" moment.
2·9 months agoThat would only solve it for python, not for say c shared libraries. For that you’re in nix land or guix or if you hate yourself containers.
I’m in nix land so I just write nix derivations so not a big deal having many versions of the same thing at once.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Stellaris 4.0 'Phoenix' game-changing update due May 5 with the BioGenesis ExpansionEnglish
3·10 months agoStellaris is a trip, don’t buy it expecting Mario. The fun is in adapting to random events and where you start. I’m biased but my fave thing to do is to enslave empires that eff me over early game by bio engineering their population to be sapient livestock. The game is awesome but it’s deep. Be prepared to lose.
You misspelled curl. The keys are right next to each other so it’s understandable.

Technology@lemmy.world•Kill your Feeds - Stop letting algorithms dictate how you thinkEnglish
2·10 months agoThis is basically the same thing as what the big platforms do. You’re just offloading the decisions of what to see to a neural network and hope it’s deciding correctly. I’m not sure what a solution would be but I’m not sure I would put my eggs in the llm/ai basket. Not without a lot more details from the models on why they made a decision.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Homelab upgrade - "Modern" alternatives to NFS, SSHFS?English
2·11 months agoAs a recently former hpc/supercomputer dork nfs scales really well. All this talk of encryption etc is weird you normally just do that at the link layer if you’re worried about security between systems. That and v4 to reduce some metadata chattiness and gtg. I’ve tried scaling ceph and s3 for latency on 100/200g links. By far NFS is easier than all the rest to scale. For a homelab? NFS and call it a day, all the clustering file systems will make you do a lot more work than just throwing hard into your nfs mount options and letting clients block io while you reboot. Which for home is probably easiest.

5·1 year agoI already have every version downloaded on my nas, more cause I hate redownloading things and am a pack rat.

Ask if you want but I’m not sure if the question is ability or suvivability. You can lick anything once. Just might regret it.

2·2 years agoI grew up on a farm, any programmer that thinks farming or ranching is better is gonna have a rude awakening as to why there are very few farmers anymore.
So no not every computer guy dreams of the farm, repairing 10miles of fence every April for the entire month all day every day isn’t what I would consider an improvement over programming. And that’s the easy part wait till you gotta help an animal struggling to give birth.
I get programmers have this idea that farming or ranching is more pure somehow but it is murder on your body and soul in ways you wont understand. programming and computer stuff is a cakewalk in comparison. more politics but learn to play the game of thrones and its not too bad.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Riot official response about League of Legends on Linux for Vanguard anti cheatEnglish
2·2 years agoIt’s more likely an admission they have to trampoline every gpl function in the kernel which isn’t really easy to do and would let that kernel module run on any other kernel. Otherwise they would have to do a shim like nvidia which would mean a whole other level of issues like saying we support Linux but only Ubuntu which as a non Ubuntu user would mean to me they do not in fact support Linux. I’d vote with walle here but I already don’t own this game as my friends said the user base is terrible years ago but this just means there is no reason to buy any of their games.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Riot official response about League of Legends on Linux for Vanguard anti cheatEnglish
2·2 years agoIt’s the same reason stuff like antivirus is a huge vector for attack. It runs at elevated permissions generally and scans untrusted inputs by default. So it makes for a great target to pivot into a system. These anti cheat kernel modules are no different in their attack profile. And if anything them being there is a good reason to target them you have a user that has a higher end gpu so the hardware is a known quantity to be targeted.

71·2 years agoOne of my favorite things to do in life is to pronounce words wrong to British coworkers like Worcestershire. I’ll enunciate that exactly as written every time even after corrected cause you lot may have invented English but you’ve let the tea go to your heads for too long.
Every time I see these silly words and learn the alleged proper pronunciation I will endeavor to pronounce them exactly wrong as is tradition. Or I’ll make a deal, I’ll pronounce them right if I can yeet tea into the nearest harbor with the British person watching as is also the tradition of my country.
Sigh, you missed the obvious pun: would you like some cheese with your wine?
