I use Lemmy Community Seeder. Every four hours it checks the top posts on instances you specifies and automatically subscribes you to communities that appear there but you aren’t already subscribed to. You can tweak it to ignore specific communities or instances.
AppleTV + Infuse = zero transcoding. Add that Apple will be allowing VPN on device with the release of tvOS 17 and it’s pretty much the perfect kit if you’re willing to spend the extra dollars.

I can see wanting to run your own DNS to serve personal clients for privacy purposes but for self-hosting class stuff I can think of plenty of downsides and zero upsides to privatizing this.

That’s what I’m not understanding. Willing to pay what? They’re not paying commission because they don’t owe anything. It’s not a matter of price being high or low. Why would they pay for something that they don’t have to pay for? Their cost is zero.
Are you of the belief that devs get to say, “I’m poor, I can’t pay”. Can’t really understand what your comment is implying.
I’m going to get crucified for this… for a desktop end-user it’s basically Linux with completely different syntax, lesser hardware compatibility and limited support channels.
Least expensive is Virtualbox or UTM.
Simplest is Parallels.
My personal instance that is pulling in close to the top 500 communities. Over the past week I see about 4 million requests and 17GB data served.
Storage is cheap but most of the instance operators that are setting up right now aren’t prepared for how much storage they’re going to need and it’s associate costs. I’m not talking the big boys like .World, but the hundreds of private and semi-private instances being set up on $12/mo VPS and such.
After 30 days of running my single user instance I’m at 23GB of storage. Since I’m using on prem equipment I have the lowest cost per GB possible and am not the least concerned. We’re going to see a ton of attrition with hosted instances as the costs of ownership goes from 10, to 20, to 40, to $50+/mo. due to storage. Many aren’t in anyway prepared to tackle the topic of moving PICTRS off to object storage or engage in other mitigations.

If Joe hasn’t been provided the binaries from RedHat they’re under no obligation to provide the sources.
And the true sources can easily be obtained from the upstream, same place every other distro provider get’s them.

Not making their package sources generally available for download is NOT the same as closed source. The only ones subject to their new licensing agreements are their paying customers. They are very much pushing against the spirit of FOSS licenses but there is no potential for some Joe on the street to get sued for looking at their source code.

RedHat is not going closed source. All the code is still open source. Nobody is getting sued for looking at it.
Thanks for this. Someone else has mentioned this a while back and I completely forgot what it was called. Which is ironic given what the acronym stands for. I’ll give it a second look.
Not shocking. It’s not a huge market and there’s a lot more competition than there was even just a couple of years ago. Cost of entry has plummeted.
Stow is good and I’d recommend it for someone starting out. By the time I found about it I had already written a silly amount of code from scratch to accomplish effectively the same thing.
Obviously Ubuntu wants to push Ubuntu but this is a fair take. Notably, outside of iOS/macOS development, a vast majority of enterprise developers that do use macOS are going to leverage the GNU tools, typically via Homebrew. So while they may not be using LINUX itself, the tools and user experience are all the same.
Even Apple leverages Homebrew for package management and advertises to its devs.
In addition to the reasons already mentioned, Apple has a requirement that applications have a novel component. While it’s often questionable as to what is considered “novel” Weather applications get contrasted against the built-in weather app. If the app simply duplicates the functionality it will be rejected.
