Linux@lemmy.ml•How does discovery work in fedora server?English
3·29 days agoThe router does not handle mdns discovery. That’s a Linux service. The router can answer questions from other clients but if has to be given the answer by the host in the first place. That’s what systemd-resolved and avahi do.

Technology@lemmy.world•DRAM prices are spiking, but I don't trust the industry's reasons whyEnglish
11·29 days agoJust built a rig to give me enough raw power I move however I need yo when this all blows up. Went with a Ryzen 5000 series cpu and ddr4 ram and a godawful motherboard with an Intel B580 cpu. It’s cheap but I now have more options.
Too bad I couldn’t get the opnsense VM working properly so I’m stuck with keeping the firewalla running. But that may not matter as the Nazis want to kill the internet anyway. We may be forced to rely on wonky mixnets like reticulum.

Technology@lemmy.world•Snapdragon X1 Elite Linux laptop cancelled due to performance concerns — Linux PC maker says Qualcomm CPU is ‘less suitable for Linux than expected’English
1·1 month agoThe X1 elite is perfectly fine for most people performance wise and as much as I hate Qualcomm, we need the competition.
But yea, support for this is arriving to the market too late to matter.
Gay perspective:
You must have a face pic of you working the last decade first. After that, anything goes.
Ads are reduced from appearing once every 5 taps to once every time you launch the app. At most. Go away. My hands are busy. That’s why I’m here.
If you use a VPN, you never see ads, and if you route porn traffic and Tiannamen square footage you get free membership forever.

Technology@lemmy.world•What the leaked AI executive order tells us about the Big Tech power grabEnglish
3·1 month agoShort answer: no
No raid. Instead ship 2 or 3 copies of data spread across different storage devices.
Honestly, is tape still a thing? Because this is exactly what it was good at.

Technology@lemmy.world•BoM asked to explain ‘what happened here’ after cost of website redesign revealed to be $96.5mEnglish
5·1 month agoSo short story time… Years ago, me, the guy I was dating at the time, his step father and mother are hanging out. She says her company finally decided who to hire to revamp all their internal stuff. (Oprah said something about their blenders and now a small Ohio company couldn’t keep up with demand). I’m a tech nerd. Boyfriend fell out of her. Step father used to work at DEC. we all have our reasons to be interested.
“Yea, we hired some company called Oracle.”
All of us had the exact same reaction. Perfectly in sync. It was not one of approval.
I warned her this will end in lawsuits. I was right, they sued Oracle from what I heard. Oracle lied every step of the way about what they could and would do. They missed every fucking deadline. They tested fuck all. Nothing ever worked the way it was CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGATED to work. Because Oracle is basically a law firm that contracts tech work out to India.
She no longer works there which is why I can share this story.

Technology@lemmy.world•BoM asked to explain ‘what happened here’ after cost of website redesign revealed to be $96.5mEnglish
13·1 month agoWho in fuck would be dumb enough to hire Oracle for anything anymore? They are sustained entirely by their legal department. Have you found literally anyone in the last decade happy with the end result from Oracle?

Linux@lemmy.ml•cannot get network bridges working in fedora serverEnglish
1·1 month agoTo anyone following, I found part of the problem was a few stale interfaces cockpit lied about were still around. Cockpit still sucks. if you must use it, only tweak with it. do initial config from the CLI.
Now I just need to figure out how to keep the bridges from deactivating when the VM doesnt load fast enough for them. NetworkManager seems really impatient.

2·1 month agoI stopped putting it off and built a ddr4 based pc as soon as I could. Didn’t plant it out as much as I normally would and now it’s biting me in the ass somewhat but that’s always part of the fun.

Linux@lemmy.ml•cannot get network bridges working in fedora serverEnglish
1·1 month agoOkay I did that with WAN and that can work there but it’s not possible to do that with LAN because the containers need to be able to talk to those networks too.

1·1 month agoI have a failover so it’s not a risk. And I cannot pass the intel card to the VM because the passthrough on this motherboard only works on GPU and one of the NVMe slots. The goals of this build was to put everything in one box and get the fuck off the cloud.
