I used to use a forum dedicated to cruisers and it was really really great for about a decade. Then personalities started to flex, it became more combative, and it started getting harder to find the info I was looking for. I struggled for a few years, having to sift through result after page after result.
Then someone suggested FBGs, named after the Exact part I was searching for. And that was it, I was hooked.
DIY solar, DIY water makers, the manufacturer of my sailboat, Victron products, charts, OpenCPN, RBPie on boats, you fucking name it.
And the best part is I don’t have to play the Reddit game. You know the one where you post incorrect information as fact so people can rush in to correct you. FBG just ask the question as best you can and … 10 minutes later information is rolling in.
I fucking hate Zuck, and what Meta does, but I also want to be able to not sink myself or blow anyone up. Which is nice.
Mansplaining The obvious
I support who gets me the information I need. I live on a 29 foot cruising sailboat at large and so when I need to know about a part, or current, or a customs office, or some other thing and I don’t want to sift, FBGs it is.
It would be irresponsible of me to get caught back in the rat race. Today I’m going to a nearby island to tune up my dinghy motor with tips I learned on a FBG while you’re going to work. Irresponsible … Go look down your nose at someone else.
Fuck, I hate to say this, but for sailing & cruising and all the associated stuff, Facebook groups is the fastest path to the knowledge you seek.
The very 1st thing I install post setup is Guake. It’s a Quake style drop down terminal. It’s absolutely indispensable.
The same way it always ends. Bloodshed.
Better ROI for sure.
That’s a very broad question. I can say by switching I saved the firm $60,000 the 1st year out of the gate. This included purchasing the Nutanix hardware as well, to run what was at the time, a six node cluster, replacing a 6 node VMW setup (on premise).
After the 1st year we replaced the VMW setups at the remote office and the COLO. It was a no brainer. That was also close to $60k each site as well, though we had other cost considerations.
You will spend more money for competent Administration over a VMW farm in the short run unless you/your team are *nix capable. If you are a *n ix/CLI house, you’re going to absolutely wet your pants with joy, possible #2 as well.
If you haven’t tried Nutanix, you really really should. I’m a six year veteran and there is absolutely no way I would ever bare metal again with VMWare in spaces I didn’t have to, and that’s Prior to the Broadcom buyout.
Download The Nutanix Bible and start reading.
[edit] And I’ll add that their support team is mother fucking second to NONE. Every ITS team should take lessons from them.
If I never eat another plantain or yuka again I’m ok with that.

Fix Shoutcast damn it.

I can get behind this.
Now unfuck Shoutcast next
Exactly. These three T580s were all NIB and have no modifications other than 2nd drive. Side by each with the same pics you can see the difference between all of them. One is really really nice, one is heavy orange, the other weighted blue.
After having a W, T, and X versions of the 520/220 line the T580 just isn’t up to snuff. The keyboard flexes, the track pad dies/gets stuck blah blah blah. I agree on the hot, and it’s a crippled chip to boot. I get the same amount of time on the 580 (i7 1.8) with the extended pack as I do the T15g2 (i5 2.4), same OS. And the keyboard doesn’t flex. That’s what pisses me off about the 5 series. It’s a premium product for premium prices, even my ancient EEE doesn’t flex and it was paltry $300 at the time.
Sorry rant over.
I’ll get right on that. Thanks.
Bro I have these machines in my possession and you’re wrong.
Sounds like a boat to me…
