I think you only nginx and dns sorted if you want to go public and or super secure. I acces my servers via their tailscale host name. That includes ios linux android clients. If you don’t know what tailscale is in a few words the easiest way to access your services/servers.

Show me a ban that didn’t came with 10x problems. People have their needs even the filthy ones. Especially the filthy ones. Hence will find a way to fulfill it. Nixos Is my first distro I use on desktop. I’m not sure why but I guess the fact that it won’t build till it checks Is a huge plus for me. I love to f up things to learn from them but I don’t like broken things and oh boy. Nix keeps me in the clean, safe. Don’t get me wrong im doing stupid stuff all the time but just cus i have a few configs written down i can learn a lot. Or a little that amazes me lol

I use yazi via ssh(it beats most file browsers even the gui once with photo preview and such) and before that i was browsing through the casa OS file manager. Casa was my second entry to self hosting

Hard agree on most of these. Try searchxng regards the search bit. It’s a self hostable search proxy. It’ll use everything from bing to duckduck and the topics(eg map search images) are more relevant and specific (at least for me) it looks like the unshitified google era.

And ofc ladybird is far af but i think it’s something that we need right now

I’m in the same boat using Zen. Eagerly waiting on Ladybird to come out. They are writing it from the ground up not even a package being used according to them. Oh and this isn’t some rando this is a guy who done decades of coding(mostly browser) so my hopes are high as Snoop

Wow i was on a very similar setup last year software stack wise. I have a small pc i5gen 10 (eats way less than one might think due to the laptop hardware) proxmox on it running 2 debian vms one for home assistant the other for anything else pretty much that doesn’t require huge horsepower but through the weeks/months crashes and bugs i decided to move my media server to a separate box with native jellyfin install to make sure i have full advantage of the hardware acceleration. That machine is nixos but that’s a whole other story 😂.

I think constant iteration is the key/fun with self hosting. I can’t tell you a single thing on my not so long but very eventful journey that I regret. Maybe try to find what is actually “mission critical data” that you once setup you say i need this to be online and reliable etc so you can play more freely on a separate system be that a vm or anything. Oh and document everything you do will come handy 10000% i guess that’s the only thing I wish I could done better is finding a tool I like to document with. For me it’s like this: I start documenting then something annoying happens with the note taking app or it’s just bloated and I’ll unintentionally abandon the whole thing.
