Nah, if I have kids (once the economy allows me to do so without being on the verge of bankruptcy), I’m giving them a Karri Messenger 1 to start out with, then the Messenger 2: https://karri.io/collections/all

Then when they’re older: Light Phone: https://www.thelightphone.com/

If they absolutely need a phone like the other kids, or when they’re 16-18, they’re getting a phone with GrapheneOS on it.

Which is precisely why this will fail. Christians don’t actually believe anything they preach. They just want to be seen as pious, and a phone carrier doesn’t give them a visible virtue signal.

Freud would give you a long diatribe about the distinction between Id, Ego, and Superego.

You can believe a thing is wrong and still do it. Ask any smoker. You can do a thing and wrestle with the psychological consequences afterwards. Ask anyone who has ever felt guilty. You can plan to behave a certain way and become derailed by impulses or anxiety. Ask anyone who has ever succumbed to fear or pain.

Self-policing is a logical response to an illogical/immoral impulse. Tossing cookies out of the cabinet and ice cream out of the fridge is the first step towards dieting. Cancelling your credit card is a technique to curb impulsive spending. How is this any different?

Can we please not. I don’t bring up hylomorphism when I talk about physics, so can you please give psychology a similar dignity by treating it like an actual science?

I don’t bring up hylomorphism when I talk about physics

Psychology isn’t a question of physics. The complex machine that is the human brain isn’t some single-action lever with a discrete well-defined input/output relationship. Neither is the human brain some binary circuit governed by logic gates and trivially deterministic sequences.

At some point, you have to approach psychology experimentally. You can’t just wave your hands and assume you know how the black box of the mind is going to work. And you can’t dismiss the accumulated experimental data because you don’t like the person who spearheaded its compilation.

And you can’t dismiss the accumulated experimental data

I don’t. I actually read psychology meta-analyses about accumulated experimental data, and relatively few individual papers are using terms like “superego” (and I can find two meta-analyses, one of which is just describing psychoanalysis). Even then, it’s within a modern framework of psychoanalysis which has evolved over 100 years, not regurgitating what they think “Freud would say”. You’re citing Freud specifically by literally saying “here’s what Freud would say”, so don’t strawman me by pretending I’m anti-experimental data or whatever the fuck.

Psychology isn’t a question of physics.

I’m not saying it is; it’s an emergent phenomenon in a chain thereof. I’m saying it is a science that deserves to actually be taken seriously, not mired in “here’s what someone who barely understood the field as we understand it today would’ve said” like that holds literally any weight about why people behave the way they do.

It gets so so much worse once you unpack this.

          Consider these two points:

          • God is omnipotent, i.e. He can create or destroy or do anything He wants.
          • God is omniscient, i.e. He knows what happened, happens and will happen, and everything about the world He created.

With the powers He has, He:

          • Intentionally created humans that would fall for apple trick (as an omniscient being, He knew in advance they will)
          • Intentionally created Satan to set the scene
          • Dramatically exiled humans from heavens as if it’s their fault (knowing full well it’s His work, not theirs)

So, instead of just making a swarm of loyal creatures, he decided to be playful and make those creatures eternally ashamed of themselves, struggling to earn His approval even when He actively made their lives miserable through cataclysms, genocides, and all sorts of calamities.

He’s literally a celestial “why are you hitting yourself?” bully, expecting to bully billions of people into servitude.

And if gayness is wrong, why did he make his creatures (non-human) participate in it? Homosexuality has been documented in thousands of species around the globe.

Because only humans are intentionally and thoroughly engineered after the God himself, the rest is decorations and game, obviously.

do not ask why God has urine and semen coming from the same place, where did He take inspiration for a woman and why the hell did He create periods, or a million other curious questions

It makes more sense from the Gnostic mythological perspective. When you frame the Old Testament God as a Trump-type character who ignorantly claims to be all-knowing, all-seeing, all-powerful, and the only God, because he really doesn’t know any better, then the behavior you see in the Old Testament kind of tracks.

You know who didn’t block sex-workers and Queer people? Jesus.

(Jesus offends the religious authorities more than a few times because of His associations, notably “prostitutes”–with a later tradition holding that the woman to whom Jesus’ return from death was first revealed, Mary Magdalene, was herself a sex-worker; as for Queer followers in the Bible, Jesus makes reference to “eunuchs” and Jesus Himself seems to fit on the asexual scale)

Christian fundamentalists would prefer to ban a lot of things for everyone. Since they cannot do that, they resort to the next best thing, which is to ban them for their own crowd. But the main objective is to have every device be like that. If this phone network establishes itself in the long run, it will be a big L for all of us.

That’s one of the scary things about all this “age verification” bs. Not only is it just mass surveillance, but in “protecting minors” from “adult content” those of us who identify as LGBTQ are labelled as adult content just for existing by these fundamentalists. Entire swaths of people will be banned just for existing, especially once Palantir gets as much data as possible and flags IDs and faces as LGBTQ dissidents.
