It’s almost like all these CEOs and MBAs are just shooting in the dark because of the $$$ in their eyes, but the fact remains that the market is no longer responding favorably to their absolute need for year-over-year growth.

I’ve actively been trying to have as much as possible in AV1, and before that, h265. A lot of my older material is still in h264.

That said, I generally have the following patterns:

• 720p media at feature length should be about 1 GB, if not less.

• 1080p media at feature length in h265 should be between 1.5-2GB. Ideally more towards 1.5GB. The same 1080p media in AV1 should be about 30% smaller.

I simply don’t see the need to encode at higher bitrates to have larger file sizes than that. I don’t see significant difference at 1080p.

And the employers are actually already breaking the law for employing such people. It shouldn’t be going beyond that, and yet we never see politicians making that point, because it’s apparently a no-no to call out corporations for their actions at this point in American history.

Edit: and also, at least in the case of who I was talking about, they’d never suggest wages were too low across the board. They’re secure in their scapegoat. We aren’t really disagreeing, I don’t think, but this issue runs deeper because there are ideologies at play that do not adhere to logic.

A former friend of mine was heavy into the right wing and worked construction (surprising, I know). He was always complaining about “illegals taking jobs” and how he thought the work they did wasn’t good anyway.

One day, I asked him: why doesn’t your company stop hiring these people you hate? He said it’s because then they wouldn’t have enough people. Naturally, this is a contradiction. It didn’t matter, of course. His whole personality was built on hating these people.

I think it is that way with a lot of folks. If we penalize employers (like we should, because, you know, the law), then these people can’t hate as effectively. That means they might start voting differently.

I like this. It has a kind of military radio chic.

I’ve been on Lemmy ever since the reddit API fracas. To date, I have not seen a reason to return. I have, however, seen many reasons to stay away.

It is far more convenient to pirate than to buy media legally, due to the extreme and purposeful fragmentation of streaming services and their constantly changing libraries. If you want people to pirate less, make your service(s) competitive.

This is only new vinyl, right? In my town, used records are king, by far. In fact, I probably buy 10+ used records for every new record.

Higher audio quality than CD? No, that is demonstrably false.

More pleasant to listen to than CD or other digital formats? Yes, that I agree with. It’s entirely subjective, but I’m definitely not alone in the feeling. The fact it is hard to quantify is why lots of people don’t “get” vinyl until they’ve sat and heard it on a decent system. Something about it is pleasing. As another commenter mentioned, it might just be the imperfections.

So I guess it’s a bit of a philosophical question. If CDs technically sound better, but vinyl sounds more pleasing: does the vinyl then sound better? People tend to chase pleasure, and in the time it takes someone to explain how much lower the noise floor is on CD or how we can only perceive so many samples, etc, etc – you could have been chilling with multiple records and had a great listening experience.

Iirc I did this once when I was a much younger person. Fantastic game and incredibly challenging, especially near the end. Great work!

We were all fed the lie that ads were a necessity to “pay” for services that were otherwise free to the consumer. Of course, it was always the plan to charge for anything that really took hold, and it was concurrently the plan to throw more and more ads on everything anyway – it’s just now, they’re considered normalized.

Yep, makes sense. Pop is great tbh, unless you want bleeding edge packages. I haven’t had issues with it, and as I mentioned, I think Pop Shell is the only tiling option for Gnome.

What I mean is that the two windows open in the bottom of the screenshot appear to be tiled with padding. It looks like Pop Shell is in your menubar as I look at it again, so I guess I answered my own question – but I’ve been looking for another way to tile windows in Gnome and I’m not sure it exists.

Looks great! Are you using Pop Shell for tiling?

I’ve been impressed with Budgie, especially on older hardware, as an alternative to Gnome. Hoping things keep going well.

Sub-50 quid though? Am I shopping in the wrong places?

There are later model M keyboards for cheap, but they’re almost always the rubber dome versions.
