Oh, I need this thread. I’ve been all over the place ever since Mint shut down.
Hey, thanks for reading my bio. You know, you’re pretty cool. I’m glad we got to share this moment together.
Oh, I need this thread. I’ve been all over the place ever since Mint shut down.
I’ve been trying to find a more privacy-friendy alternative to Discord but I keep coming back to the issue of screen sharing. No other platform does it as smoothly.
The best I’ve found is using Parsec with some virtual audio cables to avoid voice feedback.
I went to a conference this weekend, and it slowly dawned on me how every single one of the vendors was selling their app hosted on AWS. That’s all it is. Just different flavors of AWS.
Even if you dont interact with AWS directly, every business needs business services - you can bet that no matter what you’re buying or who you’re buying it from, some of your money is going directly to AWS marketplace.
We need a snek community on Lemmy
I recently stumbled upon SDF and it honestly filled me with so much hope and inspiration, that something so cool and benevolent could be held sacred for decades and has persisted through all the changes and enshittification, it felt like climbing a mountain and finding a perfectly preserved monastery with libraries full of wisdom still stewarded by living digital monks.
And yet when I share my enthusiasm with anyone, they say “i don’t get it, just looks like an outdated website to me…” -_-
If this works, could you theoretically cover crop fields in solar panels as well? That’s a ton of usable space
This is just the game “Hypnospace Outlaw”
Watching dune 2 in the IMAX theatre with my buds was perhaps one of the greatest movie experiences in my life
I need to try this, it looks great!
Knew some of this but did not know how far it went. Great write up.
I’ve gotten nearly my entire circle on Signal and it’s incredibly satisfying. No more worrying about seeing ads based on my text conversations.
Possible solution to the Von Neumann bottleneck? Or does this address a different issue
I’ve been getting very close to ditching YouTube. This change showed up a few weeks ago for me and pushed me a bit further.
If they succeed in inserting ads into the video stream I’ll bail alltogether. I can fit a subscription to Brilliant, Dropout, and several creator Patreons into the cost of a YouTube Red subscription, and I won’t have to deal with these attention-optimizing UI changes.
They went non-profit recently to specifically prevent this from happening.
Stopped using Discord a few months ago. Not for any specific reason, just felt like I wasn’t using my time effectively. Anyone important added me on Signal, and then I deleted the apps from my phone and computer.
I can’t put words to how much better my mental health has gotten.
This doesn’t really relate to your comment, I guess, but just thought I would mention it in case anyone else is considering taking a break from the platform.
Culturally, not a fan, for many reasons others have mentioned - and the whole caste system thing tends to sour a lot of the otherwise positive aspects.
That said, the food is EXCELLENT, and that must not be overlooked.
Every drone does that, since RemoteID got implemented.
This is also good, but, on the other hand, airships are awesome
This is a fantastic read. I wasnt around for the prime days of forums but I did experience them a bit.
I’m becoming extremely concerned about the number of topics and projects that are migrating to Discord. My main issue is that it is not and never will be publically indexed, and among other problems, is itself a corporate walled garden we consider to be “one of the good ones”.
I really hope we find and establish a “low executive cost” solution before the next time Discord fumbles (which is inevitable) and we can claw some of that activity back.
But people are so used to seamless voice and video chat nowadays - and that’s a technical hurdle that AFAIK, no open-source self-hostable projects have come close to solving.
