It blows my mind that it took a decade for them to realize that they should make a proper desktop application. It used to be pretty obvious from the get-go…

The problem is that Matrix doesn’t allow you to opt out of video streams when you’re in a voice chat. And Revolt doesn’t even have video-streaming. Discord’s video-streaming is incredibly robust on average, though I, too, long for a competent, free competitor.

A lot of us have friends and communitites that still use it. Not everyone is a recluse or surrounded by other like-minded evangelists unfortunately

If your friends are not willing to communicate with you through other means, they are not your friends. If your community of choice is exclusively on discord, you should question your choices.

ok buddy. I know it can be difficult to conceive when you’re so insufferable that only like-minded folks wanna be around you but getting people and communities to migrate when everyone is already on a platform is quite more difficult than merely saying “let’s all move to X app”. I mean both of my main communities (both at around 10k members) tried to make a matrix bridge as a stepping stone towards hopefully migrating and neither succeeded because of 1) technical issues making bridges not quite well, 2) unwillingness to move from a communication platform with people and content to platform with no people and no content (after all, if you have to use Discord for all the other communities or whenever the bridge fucks up why would you not just use Discord at that point?) and 3) lacking infrastructure (not everyone can pay to self-host a community of 10k with a well-maintained bridge while also doing all the moderating).

My close friends and family use signal after I talked them into it so that ain’t no issue for me but asking folks to use a specific platform just for 1 person is quite the ask for many and not everyone wants to be a lonely basement dweller that does nothing but complain about shit on Lemmy just because it refuses to use some objectively shit apps. There are people in the world who can be very good people and very good friends but happen to not be into all the privacy stuff, just like you may not be into stuff surrounding other very important rights. So yes, we still have to care about the apps we have to use

And I still will use web client, because disabling process detection doesn’t actually disable it, it just stops showing it in your profile but still runs. (Last time I checked was a couple of years ago)

If there ever is an alternative that is also free to use, has (almost) the same features or more and has a at least halfway decent UI & UX, I’m more than willing to switch. But the only software I found that was pretty much on the same level as Discord (besides popularity) got bought and killed shortly afterwards by Roblox.

Is nix a source-distribution distro? Does it compile C packages locally as well or just rust?

In any case discord is going to provide binaries only.

In theory a less resource intensive program that should be more secure and have fewer bugs. Electron and React Native are large frameworks that abstract away a lot at the cost of bundling a web browser and significant code overhead into your program.

I’m not optimistic they’ll actually do it well but that’s a separate topic.

Why would it be more secure? Electron has a massive ecosystem with a good bug bounty program afaik.

Less surface area to attack; Electron bundles a stripped down Chrorium browser and to make graphics you also gotta use JS… so basically there could be 3 more parts to attack

It would (hopefully) have less attack surface. Electron is, after all, a whole browser, and needs to be able to do all the things a browser can do, while a native implementation can limit itself to just the very limited network interactions needed. (e.g. while XSS attacks are quite hard to do on a modern browser, a native app would make them impossible)

Does rust have a mature sandboxing environment similar to a browser though?

Legit asking as I thought that was one of the selling points to electron. It also seems like one of the easiest things a shiny new app that leans heavily on Claude is probably gonna fuck up

🤷‍♂️ I just made my own server and my friends joined that, then we talk while we play Rocket League. Just like we did on Discord.

I dunno why you need to join so many communities on Fluxer?

I never said I needed to join so many communities but the list of communities is small. For example, I have a huge interest in certain types of music and I like to find out about bands and artists I may have never heard of, so its nice to join a community of people from around the country/world. Also, getting people you know to switch to something different or more privacy respecting isn’t always the easiest. Believe me, I’ve tried.

You… use Discord for this stuff? Communities around interests? I wouldn’t have thought to use it for that. I only use it to comm with my buddies while we play games. 🤷‍♂️

I feel you. I just told my bros I’m not using Discord, so if they want to talk it’s either Steam voice chat or Fluxer. Thankfully they jumped on board. (Very difficult to play Rocket League well at higher levels without voice comms.)

Ah, no not that many double commits at our level mostly due to game sense, and we’ve been playing together for close to ten years now. But I haven’t experienced any noticeable delay in neither Discord, nor Fluxer. So, I might not be the best person to ask. Perhaps I’ve been lucky. Steam voice chat had quite a latency, however, IME.

Maybe I’m confused here but if you’re seriously questioning whether you’d benefit from a smaller, Swedish based service over an American tech giant (unsure if this term applies to Discord in all honesty) - for starters you have the Swedish laws/consumer rights, GDPR. This company’s whole idea also seems to resolve around being ‘basically like Discord’ - but without all the aggressive data collection, fingerprinting users, storing messages, and profiting from users data. I also took a quick look at the ToS and PP and it seems pretty solid what their ideals seems to be, or what they want to advertise themselves as. But hey, I bet using a US tech giant company with its entire business model focused on making a profit from user data in the year 2026 is just as good for data privacy respecting laws and regulations as any other!

Do whatever you want, bro. 😄 I’m proud of my guys at Fluxer, fighting the ugly Discord.

Matter of fact imma uninstall Discord when I get back home in a couple of hours.

Fluxer has been everything I need it to be in order to switch. Just saying. And what I use it for is basically just voice chat while gaming. No complaints thus far. Do with that what you will.
