I find it kind of funny that Spider-Man is held up as some sort of golden standard to adhere to in all of this. Spider-Man is also very average game imo. The gameplay is not very compelling, and it’s no surprise that Insomniac’s approach would overstay its welcome after a couple of games. Doubly so when you move from Spider-Man, a character with a more diverse moveset and inherent better traversal abilities, to Wolverine.
I am going to throw my thoughts in. Spiderman is as good as Arkham City, and I think it depends on which super hero you prefer.
From a game standpoint, they are very close to each other, I think batman has slightly better stealth, but Spiderman has better traversal. Combat is good enough in both to give you enough room to be expressive if you want, and the open world fluff is mostly not insulting (maybe not those riddler trophies though).
Both are good 8/10 games.
But everything thing I have seen about Wolverine is at best fine, and then you just have the Devs insulting the players and their intelligence.
I am surprised wolverine is getting scores as high as it is, but from a glance and an outside point of view, I am offering a 4 or 5/10.
And one last note, Arkham Asylum is better than City, the more intricate level design is better than an open world.
They literally just got web slinging right and the childhood dream of a game where you fly through building and stop random crimes as Spiderman worked as it did in your imagination.
that was a big feat but yeah, those games were over hyped when they were basically just really fun to move around in
Spider-Man 2 already did this decades ago, and there was actually a learning curve to that game’s traversal, making it way more satisfying when you got good at it.
It was 14 years between those games. It’s a good mechanic that deserved to be dusted off. There were a bunch of other Spiderman games between them that didn’t do it. The Insomniac Spiderman had better everything else too, people really forget what that old Spider-Man 2 game was like outside of the swinging mechanics.
Yeah, I will not pretend that I did not have fun with it. However, by the end of it I had not desire for more of it. As a result, I haven’t played any of the sequels.
Because you really feel like spiderman… said one review from like one of the first to do the web travel mechanics in a pretty fun way… and when every spider man game basically copy pasted the same mechanics into a barely changed method, rather than criticizing it for being a copy paste of their last game with updated graphics, reviewers decided they could instead copy paste their reviews with slightly updated phrasing.

Spider-Man (PS4) was just a worse Arkham with web slinging. And it sounds like Wolverine is just a worse Spider-Man without web slinging.

Yes! So damned boring!!

It’s not quite that simple. The first game also had THE best story and adaptation of the character we’ve ever seen.

Because Spider-Man was a very popular, well-recived game both critically and commercially, from the same studio.
They had a standard of expectation and didn’t meet it.

Its literally just an Assassin’s Creed or Arkham game but with more web-swinging.
Those games have way more depth and interesting worlds to explore.
With the Spider-Man games I just really enjoyed the story. And I also love just swinging through a somewhat accurate New York.
